Math is one of the most challenging subjects for students of all ages. What Math Courses Does CalPac Offer?

Most students who join CalPac in the ninth grade begin with general math, which verses them on the basics of pre-algebra. From there, the progression is: 

• Algebra (predominantly linear equations)
• Geometry (figures, polygons, trigonometry, etc.)
• Algebra II (quadratic equations, transformations, and advanced algebra)
• Precalculus (exponential equations, logarithmic functions, matrices, etc.)

How are the Classes Taught?

Math classes at CalPac are very small, enabling our teachers to directly connect and converse with students individually. When students first log on to their CalPac Blackboard for a new course, they watch a brief introductory video from their teacher. The video is offered with closed captioning and a downloadable transcript. Once every week, students join an hour-long “live session” on Blackboard, where they get a traditional math lesson delivered virtually.

CalPac strongly encourages note-taking, and teaches the basics of Cornell Notes to help students prepare for higher education. Practice problems reinforce key concepts, while independent quizzes and topic tests provide the framework for grading. Confidence is crucial in high school math, which is why homeschool math classes are so desirable. Students can actively participate during classes, without worrying about getting the wrong answer in front of their peers. In between tests and live sessions, they have 24/7 access to all course materials. 

What Tutoring Options are Available?

Tutoring at CalPac is proactive and personalized. If a student does not pass a quiz, their teacher receives a notification, upon which they contact the student to offer assistance. Each CalPac math teacher dedicates at least 10 hours of his or her workweek to tutoring.

Tutoring sessions are typically one-on-one for 30 minutes. During this time, the student can ask questions verbally or through chat, follow along on their computer screen, and save the slides for future reference. Occasionally, sessions might involve two or three students who are struggling with the same lesson. Many students like to take advantage of tutoring right before a test so that the concepts and formulas are fresh in their minds. Parents appreciate CalPac’s hands-on tutoring because math is an especially tedious topic to teach.

Go at Your Pace

There is nothing more overwhelming to a student than falling behind in math. That’s why we make a point to help students complete coursework at a pace that is comfortable for them. Our credit recovery program allows students to accelerate their learning and complete an entire course within a month or two. For those who prefer a more standard pace, or those who have special needs or a learning disability, our regular program offers semester-long courses that lend themselves to slowing down during a given lesson if needed.

Carrying Math Skills into the Real World

Each semester of math at CalPac includes a special project. Students can choose from several project options, ranging from creative to analytical and everything in between. At higher levels of math, the expectations are naturally greater. A-G students can find fun and unique ways to grasp advanced concepts, with access to all of the same tools and support that helped them through earlier courses. Perhaps most importantly, our teachers translate math to the real world, so it becomes more lasting than answers and equations.
