National – Across the India:

1. Ministry of Earth Sciences, Government of India is all set to launch Deep Ocean Mission by January 2018.

This will improve India’s position in ocean research field.

2. India will become the first country to have all government-owned 12 ports running on solar and wind energy.

 The government plans to install almost 200 megawatt solar and wind power generation capacity at the ports by 2019.

 Almost 150 mw of this will be solar power and 50 mw wind power generation capacity which could be ramped up to 500 mw in the next few years.

3. Union Minister Manoj Sinha announced the India Mobile Congress 2017 (IMC 2017) which is scheduled as a three-day event from 27th to 29th September 2017 in New Delhi.

 The Indian telecom market is the second-largest in the world after China.

 India has a total subscriber base of over 1.18 billion subscribers.

4. Shri D.V.Sadananda Gowda inaugurated the new office building of National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), Sankhyiki Bhawan in New Delhi.

 He also announced that India is participating in the current phase of International Comparison Programme (ICP) with reference to 2017.

5. The Delhi Police has launched patrolling on bicycle to improve policing in congested localities in trans-Yamuna region of the city.

 The move is also being billed as a green initiative.

 The bicycle patrols will complement and supplement the existing motorcycle and PCR patrols which focus mainly on crime prevention along the arterial and main roads of Delhi.

6. PM Narendra Modi and Japan’s PM Shinzo Abe will together lay the foundation stone for the bullet train project in the month of September.

 Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train will have the speed of 320 km per hour.

 The construction work would continue for another five years and mentioned that the government was committed to complete the project by the end of 2022.

International – Across the Globe:

1. India has emerged as the third largest aviation market in the world with a passenger traffic of over 10 crore reported for 2016-17.

 Minister Jayant Sinha confirmed that Regional Connectivity Scheme (RCS-UDAN) scheme will allow India to have 200 plus airports in the next 10-15 years.

2. As per India Development Report released by World Bank, India ranks 120th among 131 countries in terms of women participation in the workforce.

 In India, the women participation in the workforce is only 27%, which is much lower as compared to China and Brazil where it is in the range of 65 – 70%.

2. President of Egypt Abdel Fattah el-Sisi signed into law a contentious new bill that regulates non-governmental organizations (NGO).

 Under the new law, foreign non-governmental groups will have to pay up to 16500 dollars to start working in Egypt and renew their permit on a regular basis.

3. The first ever women television channel Zan TV (or Women’s TV) started in Kabul, Afghanistan.

 Founder of Zan TV is Hamid Samar.

 The main purpose to launch the women TV channel is to highlight the rights of Afghan women and to improve their status and ensure their equity with men in the conservative society.

Sports & Athletics:

1. ESPN has revealed the names of top 100 most famous athletes based on the combine endorsements with social media following and internet search popularity.

 4 Indians have found a place in this elite and prestigious list.

 Indian skipper Virat Kohli is placed at No.13 followed by the Former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni at No.15.

 The other two Indians to have made to the list are all-rounder Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina. Yuvraj is placed at No.90 while Raina holds No.95.

2. Indian Cricketer Virat Kohli becomes the only cricketer to get featured in the top 10 of the ICC Players Rankings for One Day International (ODI).

 The top three batsmen featured in the ICC ODI Rankings are South Africa’s De Villiers (874 rating points), Australia’s David Warner (871 rating points) and Kohli (852 rating points).

Awards & Recognition:

1. Pranab Mukherjee presented the Hindi Sevi Samman Awards to 26 eminent Hindi scholars for the year 2015 at a function held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhi.

 The awards were conferred to the scholars under 12 different categories for their contribution in the field of Hindi language and literature.

 The awards carry a cash prize of five lakh rupees and citation.

2. Union Health Minister J P Nadda has been honoured by the World Health Organisation with the Director General’s Special Recognition Award for his leadership and commitment to advancing tobacco control.

 Health ministers of Maldives and Bhutan were also among five individuals and institutions from the WHO South-East Asia Region for this year’s World No-Tobacco Day Award.

3. Indian American author Jhumpa Lahiri has been announced as the recipient of the 2017 PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story.

 She is the author of four widely acclaimed works of fiction: “Interpreter of Maladies,” “The Namesake,” “Unaccustomed Earth,” and “The Lowland”; and two works of nonfiction: “In Other Words” and “The Clothing of Books.”

4. Ordnance Factory Medak (OFMK) has been awarded Raksha Mantri’s Awards for Excellence as the Best Performing Factory of OFB for years 2014-15, 2015-16.

 OFMK manufactures SARATH (BMP-II), the Armoured Infantry Combat Vehicle, mainly used by mechanized forces of Indian Army.

5. Tata Motors was awarded ‘HR Innovation of the Year’, for its significant contribution to skill development in the automotive sector at the Asia-Pacific Excellence Awards held in Hong Kong.

All skill development initiatives by Tata Motors are designed and implemented in line with the Global Skill Qualification Framework and Occupational Standards.

Appointments & Resignations:

1. Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi has appointed a renowned social and educational activist George Kurian as Vice-Chairman of National Commission for Minorities (NMC).

 The other appointed members of the NMC are social activist Syed Ghayorul Hasan Rizvi (Chairman), Sulekha Kumbhare, Jain representative Sunil Singhi and Vada Dasturji Khurshed Kaikobad Dastoor.

2. Former Allahabad Bank chairperson and MD Shubhalaxmi Panse and private equity veteran Pradip Shah have been appointed as a member of Banks Board of Bureau.

 Banks Board of Bureau is headed by Vinod Rai.

Economics & Banking GK:

1. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) will soon introduce currency notes of one rupee denomination.

 The notes, which have already been printed by the Government of India, are legal tender under the Coinage Act, 2011.

 The new Re.1 rupee will be pink-green in colour.

 The note will also feature an image of the Sagar Samrat oil exploration rig.

2. RBI deputy governor S.S. Mundra pushed banks to allow customers to move seamlessly between banks without having to change their account numbers.

 He also said the central bank would soon come out with final guidelines on customer protection to limit their liability in case of fraud in electronic banking transactions.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU):

1. Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) which markets its product under the brand name ‘Amul’ has signed a MoU with ISRO for fodder acreage assessment using satellite observation and space technology.

 As per the MoU, ISRO will help in identification between food crops and fodder crops at village level and also locate suitable areas of current fallows and cultivable wastelands at village level for green fodder cultivation.

2. India and Germany has inked 12 agreements which include 9 joint declarations of intent (JDIs) and 3 MoUs. They are listed below.

3 MoUs are:

 

 Agreement on collaboration between the Ministry of Skill Development and Germany’s BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research).

 Agreement between Ministry of Health and BMG (Federal Ministry of Health) on cooperation in the health sector;

 Agreement between the AYUSH and BMG (Federal Ministry of Health) over cooperation in alternative medicine;

9 Joint Declarations of Intent are:

 JDI between Ministry of Science and Technology and the BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research).

 JDI between the Ministry of External Affairs and the German Foreign Office on cooperation on cyber policy.

 JDI between the Ministry of Finance and BMZ (Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development).

 JDI between the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and BMWi (Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy).

 JDI between the Department of Heavy Industries and BMBF (Federal Ministry of Education and Research).

 JDI between the Ministry of External Affairs and the German Foreign Office.

 JDI between the Ministry of Railways and German Ministry of Transport on cooperation in railway safety.

 JDI between the Ministry of Urban Development and German Ministry.

 JDI between the Ministry of Commerce and Industry and BMWi (Federal Ministry of Economic Affairs and Energy).

Science & Technology:

1. NASA scientists have developed a new software that will help drones automatically spot the best places to crash-land in the case of an emergency, without hurting anyone on the ground.

 Increasing numbers of drones in the sky raises the risk to people and property below being hit when these unmanned aerial vehicles develop mechanical problems.

2. Scientists at IIT Kharagpur has come up with a new technology known as soil-to-soil manufacturing technology for manufacturing cheaper, quicker and pollution-free.

 The scientists used corn, sugarcane plants, the waste part of paddy straw, bamboo, banana plant, pineapple and cotton plants to produce biofuel.

Important Dates:

1. World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is observed around the world every year on 31st May.

 It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe.

 The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2017 is Tobacco – a threat to development.

Recent Notable Deaths:

1. Noted director and former Union Minister, Dasari Narayana Rao has died at a corporate hospital.

 He directed 151 movies and produced a few more and has had the distinction of working with stalwarts like N.T. Rama Rao.

 He holds Limca World Record for directing the most number of films.

 Dasari was elected to the Rajya Sabha in the year2006. He became the Minister of state in Ministry of Coal.

2. Former Panama dictator Manuel Noriega passed away on 29 May 2017 following a prolonged illness.

 Noriega ruled Panama from 1983 to 1989.

 He was serving a sentence for murder in Panama at the time of his death.
