Decimals – Place Value – Decimal charts – Class 6 Maths

Decimals – There are measurements which are not in whole numbers like 4.8, 6.94, 56.3, etc are called Decimal numbers or decimals.

Representing decimals on a number line

Represent 3.5 on a number line.

We know that 3.5 is more than 3 and less than 4. Now divide the unit length of 3 and 4 into ten parts and mark the 5th part as shown in the figure below. Now you can represent 3.5 on a number line.

Place Value

Decimal contains two parts whole numbers and decimals. The decimal point is a point that separates both parts. The numbers of places in decimal parts give a number of decimal places.

10 ones = 1 ten

10 tens= 1 hundred

10 hundred= 1 thousand

Place value of 4 at thousands place = 4 *1000= 4000

Place value of 4 at hundreds place = 4 *100= 400

Place value of4 at tens place = 4 *10= 40

Place value of4 at one place = 4 *1= 4

As in the diagram when we move to the right number, the place value of a digit become for each place.

Place value of 4 at tenth place = 4 *= = 0.4

Decimal charts

Tenths– In the figure given below the chart is divided into 10 equal parts and one part is shaded. It can be read as zero point one or one- tenth.

The shaded part represents
1/10 = 0.1

Hundreds-In the figure given below the chart is divided into 100 equal parts and forty-one parts are shaded. It can be read as zero point four one or one and forty-one hundredth.

The shaded part represents
41/100 = 0.41

Thousands-In the figure given below the chart is divided into 1000 equal parts and one part is shaded. It can be read as zero point one or one thousandth.

The shaded part represents
1/1000 = 0.001
