Know The Main Difference between IELTS and PTE

Whether you want to get enrolled in some of the technology and business-oriented courses or want to do the research in your favorite specialization from your dream university anywhere in The States, UK, Australia and another country, you need to prove your English Language Proficiency being a foreign or non-native student. To take admissions in cream foreign universities without conquering the English proficiency is just pie in the sky.

The language tests Ielts and PTE the most popular and recognized English language proficiency exams which are taken by a record number of students worldwide, but also their scores are accepted in almost every good university which offers foreign courses. Both of the exams provide the scores which are valid for 2 years. To pick up the right selection from these two highly-organized exams, you should understand how these exams differ and the main difference between IELTS and PTE.

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)

– Only English language proficiency test which is approved by the universities, student visas and immigration of United Kingdom, and widely accepted by the educational bodies in Australia, New Zealand, and Canada and even some of the universities in the United States.

– IELTS is being conducted over more than 1,500 test centers across 140 countries.

– IELTS Score Card is accepted in more than 10,000 colleges, educational institutions and other technical and business agencies in over 140 countries.

– According to a universal survey, approximately 3 million students took the IELTS in 2017 from all over the world.

– IELTS acceptance scores are not fixed for each university and college and are accepted differently by every university on the basis of different test parameter.

PTE (Pearson Test of English)

– Accredited by Edexcel, the largest examining body in the United Kingdom and administered in association with Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA).

– Started in 2009 by Pearson, Pearson Academic and Young Learner Test of PTE are one of the fastest growing English language proficiency tests in the world.

– PTE is being conducted over more than 250 test centers across more than 50 countries.

– PTE Score Card is accepted by the Australian Government for Visa and Immigration Applications along with more than 10,000 colleges, educational institutions and other technical and professional agencies across more than 50 countries.

– According to a universal survey, approximately 67% more PTE tests are conducted all over the world in 2017.

Now, let’s look at some of the main differences between IELTS and PTE

1. Exam Duration:

IELTS: IELTS is conducted over 2 days with 2 hours and 55 minutes with about 20 minutes of mandatory Speaking.

PTE: PTE is one day and one session examination of about 3 hours.

2. Type of Exam:

IELTS: IELTS is the pen-paper based examination.

PTE: PTE is completely a computer-based examination.

3. Structure and Test Pattern:

Both the exams have four mandatory tests which are Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing but differ in some certain context:

Speaking: In IELTS, the Speaking test is conducted face-to-face by the authorized IELTS Examiner and the assessments are recorded by conducting live conversations to test the speaking ability of the student or immigrant.

Whereas in PTE, there is no live recording of Speech. The speech of the exam taker is recorded via a microphone and the evaluation of speech parameters are examined by the computer-based verified speech software.

Timer: In IELTS, the timer for each exam section is fixed and the students can move forward and backward for every section but in PTE, the students can only take the sections in a forward way and cannot come back to the previous section.

4. Score Card and Result Pattern:

IELTS Score Card is generated by a 0-9 Band whereas PTE Score Card is based on the commutative scoring and is generated in the 10-90 Band Score.

IELTS Result usually comes in the paper format and posted to the student in 13 business days, whereas PTE Result is available online typically within 5 business days.

5. Slot Availability and Test Dates:

Exam Slots: IELTS Slots are fixed while PTE Slots are flexible throughout the year.

Test Dates: For General Purpose, IELTS Exam can be taken twice a month. And, for Academic Purpose, it can be taken 4 times a month. On the other hand, PTE Exam Dates are available throughout the year and the exam can be taken 363 days in the year

The authentication of these world-class exams is universally verified and the difference between IELTS and PTE depends completely on the intention of the student to take the exam such as which university you want to be enrolled in, which country you want to travel for study and work and some other situations or if the test will be accepted by the desired college and company or not.
