The Moon is Dead…

The Moon is dead. Your soul went to the moon, to the preserver of souls. Thus the soul moved toward death. I went into the inner death and saw that outer dying is better than inner death. And I decided to die outside and to live within. For that reason I turned away and sought the place of the inner life. ~Carl Jung; Red Book; Page 267.

In Transformations and Symbols of the Libido (1912), Jung cited beliefs in different cultures that the moon was the gathering place of departed souls (CW B, §496). In Mysterium Coniunctionis (1955/56), Jung commented on this motif in alchemy (CW 14, §155). ~The Red Book; Footnote 40.
