Is Water Dangerous After Being Exposed to Nuclear Radiation?

Ionizing Radiation has been extensively researched by scientists. They have discovered that it has a range of dangerous biological effects on water, and the earth’s resources, which humans are all naturally exposed to.

Scientists have also estimated the magnitude of these biological effects, which some have resulted in increasing levels of exposure. Further studies have presented a lot of research that has been established on the biological effects of radioactivity in water specifically.

The earth is currently exposed to a form of natural ionizing radiation, which is made up of cosmic rays, and products that are made from decay derived from Radioactive Elements in the crust and atmosphere of the earth.

Some sources of radiation are derived from resources outside of the body, which we encounter every day of our lives, while others can be found in the food we eat, the air we breathe, and even the water.

Since humans have been living with sources of radiation around them for over a century, they seem to have adapted to it.

There are minute traces of radioactive sources found in drinking water all over the world. However, depending on the amount, the composition and concentration, these sources continue to vary, depending on where it’s located. Raw water may pass through different types of soil and rocks, that has an effect on the food we consume, that is harvested from the soil.

Natural Radionuclides found in water

Radionuclides responsible for the natural radioactivity found in drinking water, are all derived from different radioactive elements, as well as their decay products, which are incorporated in the earth’s formation. Some of these radioactive elements are also produced by a high level of cosmic rays.

Tritium, for instance, is produced by cosmic ray interactions, in conjunction with nitrogen and oxygen, which is oxidized into water. The concentrations present in water, produce and deliver between 1 and 25pCi per liter.

This means that a big percentage of the water resources we consume contain some source of radionuclides.

Given that we’re allowed to consume a small amount thereof, without causing harm to ourselves, radiation in extremely small quantities, derived naturally, is not dangerous to humans whatsoever.

When it is artificially produced, however, or you come into contact with it, specifically in larger quantities, it may be life-threatening. That is why water must be tested regularly, to ensure it is adequate for consumption.
