Water is Life; it is part of nature, it makes up the majority of our body, and it provides us with food, liquids, energy, leisure-time and much more.
Most individuals do not appreciate what a wonderful entity water actually is and think nothing of wasting it – they turn open the tap and let the water run unnecessarily, don’t bother to fix leaking pipes or dripping taps and essentially just assume that it is infinite and will always be there.
Perhaps if these people think about water, and get to know some of the wonderful Bodies of water that abound on this beautiful Planet of ours they would appreciate it more and become more aware of the need to conserve water and to not pollute it.
Here are just a few of the most amazing bodies of water on this planet:
- Grand Prismatic Spring, USA – is a multi-coloured spring that is also the largest hot spring in Yellowstone National Park at 90m across and over 50m deep. The pool is extremely mineral-rich, which causes it to have concentric bands of vibrant colours from red to green, due to different sets of heat-loving pigmented bacteria in each band, with the brilliant blue in the centre reaching temperatures of up to 87°C.
- Lake Retba, Senegal – looks like a giant pool of strawberry pink lemonade due to its very high levels of salt-loving microalgae called Dunaliella salina, which produce a red pigment to help absorb sunlight. The colour is especially prominent during the dry season.
- Blood Falls, Antarctica – the water for this bright-red cascading waterfall comes from a hyper-salty lake, which has been trapped beneath the glacier for 2 million years, and gets its colour from iron which reacts with oxygen in the air to form rust.
- Caño Cristales, Colombia – is located in a remote part of the Serranía de la Macarena mountain range and the river changes from ordinary clear water to a rainbow of colour between September and November. The vivid hues of red, blue, green and orange are caused by an endemic plant, Macarenia clavigera, blooming in the water – as well as mosses and algae.
