Today, central Manchester woke to find more than 300 Manchester City Women scarves draped, hung and hidden throughout the city, as the date of their highly anticipated UEFA Women’s Champions League clash against Olympique Lyonnais this coming Saturday draws near.
An array of Manchester City Women v Lyon scarves bearing both Club’s colours and crest have been placed in busy locations, encouraging the public to take a scarf and show their Support for the Manchester City Women’s team, who, in their first year in the Champions’ League, made history by qualifying for the semi-final, adding to their success on the pitch having won both the 2016 FA WSL and Continental Tyres Cup already this season.
Scarves have been left in a host of city centre locations including Market Street, Victoria, Picadilly, Northern Quarter and St Ann’s Square. Fans that find the scarves are encouraged to take one, wear it with pride and share a picture on social media using #CityvLyon.
To celebrate such a milestone achievement for the Club, those that find the scarves and showcase their support for the team will also be in with the chance of winning exclusive prizes, including golden tickets to attend the weekend’s unmissable game, a meet and greet with the team, signed player shirts and match tickets.
Speaking about the campaign ahead of the game, Manchester City Women’s team Captain and England International star Steph Houghton said, ‘Saurday’s game against Lyon is set to be one of our toughest to date, so it’s incredible to see so much support for us across Manchester. People often underestimate the power of fan support in spurring the team on. Those that find a Manchester City Women scarf over the course of the next few days are encouraged to share their support on Twitter and Instagram using #CityvLyon. Prizes will be distributed at random to those using the dedicated hashtag before 5pm on Friday 21st April.
The match itself takes place at the Academy Stadium on Saturday 22nd April at 2pm. Tickets are priced at £6 adults and £4 for children (under 16).
