August 2017 – Things to Do in the California Wine Country

August 2017 is going to be a busy month. What a fabulous time to visit the California Wine Country. There are so many fun and exciting things happening that you do not want to miss.

What’s Happening in the Wine Country


August 4-5: Mendocino County Fair Wine Competition
Attend the reception to honor the winners of this annual competition. Be there when they announce the Best of Class and the five Best of Show winners for August 2017. Sample over 200 wines. Enjoy delicious appetizers. Mingle with the judges.


August 5 – Preston Castle Wine Tasting & Tour – Ione
Sample outstanding wines of Amador County at the historic Preston Castle. Enjoy food, live music, and self-guided tours of the castle. Preston Castle was built in the late 1800s. It opened in 1894 as the Preston School of Industry, a reform school for juvenile offenders. It’s a stunning example of Romanesque Revival architecture located in Mother Lode. The castle is said to be haunted. If you’re interested there are a variety of paranormal investigations throughout the year at the castle.


August 5: Sip of Julian – San Diego
Eight tasting rooms will be offering samples of their wine, beer, hard-cider, or craft cocktails along with food pairings. This is a great time to explore the historic town of Julian. Step back in time at this 1870s gold rush community that’s an hour’s drive east of San Diego. Unique shops, restaurants, and charming bed and breakfast inns. The town is famous for its delicious homemade apple pies.


August 12 – Salinas Valley Food & Wine Festival The Salinas Valley lies along the Salinas River 120 miles south of San Francisco. This valley is known as “America’s Salad Bowl” due to the large amount of vegetables and fruits grown here. This festival is the ideal time to visit. Enjoy live entertainment, world class wines, craft beer, and gourmet food. Make reservations to attend special winemaker dinners and the optional Kickoff Party in August 2017.


August 12: Gala Wine Festival – Ukiah
Taste the best local wine and food all under one tent at Mendocino College in Ukiah. Featuring Ziggy the Wine Gal as the even emcee, there will also be a live auction and a wine pull raffle. This annual event is a fundraiser for Mendocino College.


August 12-13 -Gravenstein Apple Fair – Sebastapol
Get ready for a weekend of old-fashioned fun at Ragle Ranch Park in Sebastopol. Listen to music on two stages and browse arts and craft booths. Sample wine, microbrews, food, and cider. Participate in a variety of contests and activities.


August 18-19 – Main Street Reunion – Downtown Napa
Car lovers and history buffs will be heading to downtown Napa for this annual car show. It’s an opportunity to view 400 pre-1976 classic cars and hot rods. Also enjoy fabulous food, wine, beer, and live music. This should be a fun two days in Napa.


August 18-20 – Sta. Rita Hills Wine & Fire – Lompoc
This year’s annual Wine & Fire will be showcasing amazing local foods and world class wines. Participate in special wine tastings and seminars. Enjoy live music. Register for one or more of their three events: Barn Party, Lunch with Special Wine Tasting, or the Grand Tasting.


August 19 – 11th Annual Taste of Petaluma
Experience a culinary journey of Petaluma’s finest foods, wines, and microbrews. Enjoy a variety of live entertainment. Petaluma is just 32 miles north of San Francisco, making it a great day trip from the city. The Petaluma River flows through the historic downtown. Enjoy water activities in the river or explore the unique shops and restaurants in the area.


August 19-20 – Pacific Wine And Food Festival – Newport Beach
Sample summer inspired culinary bites from top chefs paired with fabulous wines. Listen to live music while enjoying stunning ocean views. Choose from a variety of events that include celebrity cooking demonstrations, special dinners, happy hours, and an After Party.


August 20 – Family Winemakers Tasting – San Francisco
Attend this one day event where you can taste wines from award-winning family owned wineries. More than 125 wineries will be pouring over 500 wines. It’s a great opportunity to taste wines from throughout California all in one location. Sign up now for a special wine tasting in beautiful San Francisco!


August 26-27 – Bodega Bay Seafood, Art, and Wine Festival
If you want a reason to visit the spectacular seacoast of Bodega Bay, this it. The Bodega Bay Seafood, Art, and Wine Festival features fantastic food, wine, and beer. Browse the quality arts and crafts for sale and enjoy a variety of live entertainment. Bodega Bay has charming shops, gourmet restaurant, and historic sites to explore.


August 25-27 – 32nd Annual Central Coast Wine Classic – San Luis Obispo
This event showcases wines from the Edna Valley, Arroyo Grande Valley, Shell Beach, Avila Beach, and South San Luis Obispo County. Participate in vintner dinners and both live and silent auctions. Take a look at exotic cars and quality art work. Definitely an August 2017 event to attend!
