Live and work in Germany: basic life hacks for working move

Tags: germany

What do we know about Germany? Most of Ukrainians, who has never been in this country, perceive it through the prism of established stereotypes. Namely: the people are greedy there (but punctual), girls are ugly, and Germans eat only hot dogs and drink beer.

Dobovo.com offers you to look at Germany as a country of great opportunities. We talked with a Ukrainian who successfully lives and works in this country, and asked him in detail about the approach to work, the cost of living and German porn.

I found work in Germany after two interviews

Why did you choose Germany from all EU countries?

It all started with my dismissal in Poland, where I worked in IT for 9 months. My wife and I began to think: to stay in Poland or open new horizons. After moving to Krakow, it became clear that we can go to one of the countries of the European Union.

I updated the status in LinkedIn, sent out a resume and began to be interviewed. After 2 very successful interviews I flew to a personal meeting to the Netherlands, and then to Germany.

Does knowledge of German is compulsory for living in Germany?

For life – it is necessary, for work – not. In IT knowing English is a must. But in everyday life I understand that I do not know enough. Therefore, before moving, I studied German in free language courses.

How much time did you spent on preparation for moving? Is it hard to get a visa to work in Germany?

I was preparing for moving about a month. Visa was made for 2 (two!) working days. By the way, it was very easy to get it, but given the existing bureaucracy, my nerves were shaken. One thing: in Ukraine there are German visa centers, but a working visa must be done only in the embassy in Kyiv. This, as people say in Odessa – two big differences. There, nobody understands jokes and everything is very serious.

On the experts in what field is demand in Germany?

I would say so: everyone needs IT. And people who really want to work.

Germans do not understand why they are known for their porn

Continue the sentence: I love Germany for …

… for the approach to work. It’s a fashionable to work here, cool and promising – that’s why the payment for labor is relatively high. I like Germany for the cheerfulness of people. It is often possible to meet a stranger and speak with him. People are very emotional there – especially old people.

How about: I’ll never get used to Germany to …

Bureaucracy. This is most powerful and terrible weapon in Germany. This is plus and minus: plus is that the machine works faultlessly, minus – that this process can not be accelerated (I’m not mean bribes). For example, for getting of Internet in an apartment you can spend 3-6 months. To get credit card – 2 weeks, etc.

What myths about Germany did you dispel when you moved here?

– The Germans love bread and great experts in baking.

– The Germans do not understand why they are known for their porn.

Life in Germany is slower than in Ukraine

How much is the cost of living in Germany?

Today because of the influx of refugees with housing in Germany is big problems. In search of a more or less decent apartment it takes about 3-4 months. The price for a two-room apartment in good condition – more than 700 euros. It is easier to find ice in the hell than an apartment, for example, in Munich.

Also tell us about everyday expenses.

Transport

I spend on transport in a month – 80 euros

Food

Purchasing of food for a family of two people – 400 euros.

Clothing

I didn`t calculate a cost of purchases, but, on average, things are cheaper there than in Ukraine. There are many shops where you can buy t-shirts for 2-4 euros.

Do German girls are really as ugly as Ukrainians say about them?

About what country people say that they have more beautiful girls than in Ukraine?

What is the top difference between Ukraine and Germany?

Language, religion, average life expectancy, GDP per capita and the availability of social insurance.

German way of life, in your opinion – what is it?

It is slower and more consistent. People are not hurry – everything is doing gradually and with thoughts about the future. There is no feeling that someone is stepping on your heels.

Another important point – the Germans value their time. Apparently due to the fact that Germany was for a long time divided – there is clearly established transport and road systems.

What else pleasantly surprised me: come on time here – it’s to come 15 minutes “before”. It is also considered unforgivable to cancel the meeting in the day of the meeting. I’m not talking about “oh, I forgot.”

What is your main advice for those who want to work in Germany

Plan everything in advance and try to find an apartment before you come here. It make there more problematic.

Well, believe in yourself – if I managed to find a job in Germany, then why you cannot do it
