5 + 2 reasons to visit Ternopil

When you hear something about the Ternopil city, you have in your mind the subconscious associative series: “faine misto”, “barabolya”, “zupa”, “randka”. Many of these words were taken from Polish. Why Polish? Of course, everyone has heard about Galicia. So, Ternopil is one of three regional centers of Galicia. The city was founded by Polish tycoon Jan Tarnovskyi in 1540 and originally was called Tarnopil, but after the war the name was changed. Why you should visit the pearl of Galicia, read on.

  1. Theatre square

This is a place which has gathered on its territory a creative atmosphere, made by historical architectural monuments and majestic Ternopil Drama Theater. The life is always going in full swing there and the theatre fascinates with its beauty.

2. Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception of the Holy Mother of God

It is another one must-see place in Ternopil and one of the most beautiful buildings among other similar in Ukraine. This baroque cathedral was built in 1749-1779 and rebuilt after the war. Now it is the most recognisable feature in Ternopil.

3. Church of the Nativity

One of the oldest buildings of Ternopil. It is quite easy to find this place because it is located in the city center. The famous icon of Our Lady is inside of this building, and it is worth to see with your own eyes.

4. The restaurant “Old Mill”

This restaurant is known by all those who have been in Ternopil at least once. This place is really unique and is known not only for its cuisine, but also for the interior. The owners of the restaurant did a good job with the building, and now it looks more like a piece of art of the famous Gaudi. Concerning the menu: you can taste borshch served in bread, lard and hooch there. And if you still have not tasted salo in chocolate, then you definately should try it there.

5. The island of lovers

If you are looking for romance, you should visit The Island of lovers in Ternopil. It is located in the center of Ternopil pond, and you can get to the island by using a special bridge or boat. This picturesque island belongs to the most romantic places in Ukraine. There is a legend that if the couple looks into the water, they will see their future. True or not, check it out!

6. Italian courtyard

Even more romance in Ternopil. Italian (or Venetian) courtyard is located at the intersection of Shevchenko boulevard and Kachala streets. This courtyard inspires on the romantic photo shoot and casts to the memories of the past.

7. Old Castle

If after reading the name mentioned above, you have in the mind a huge castle and old town, then we have to disappoint you. You will not see something like this there. The castle was built in 1548, but during the Second World War it was destroyed and now it is more like a palace. This is one of the symbols of the city, and its history is preserved to this day.
