Fight Dengue through Right Information and Action

It is rainy season, there is no winter in Chennai but, the Mosquito season has started in all its glory. Tamilnadu has been the target of mosquito related diseases for long, and this time, we are hearing more about Dengue and loss of life owing to it. Awareness, authentic information and action at the right time is the key to preventing Dengue. Diseases have become a part of our life and it is prudence and early detection that will help us in safeguarding ourselves.

Dengue is a mosquito-borne disease caused by four different virus types, DENV 1-4, and spread by the Aedes mosquito. Aedes mosquito is active in day time and breeds in fresh water. Many of us have the misunderstanding that mosquitoes bite only in the night and it is one of the main reason for not taking the necessary precautions during the day time. If you notice the deaths reported, most of them are children. Children tend to stay out and play in open areas during day time and hence are more susceptible to getting bitten by Aedes mosquitoes. That does not mean Aedes mosquitoes do not bite us indoors. The important fact here is one mosquito bite of Aedes is enough to cause Dengue.

What are the symptoms of Dengue we must be aware of?   Dengue has similar symptoms like influenza (Flu) and painful headache. Dengue affected people also exhibit skin rash, muscle/ join pain, nausea and vomiting.

Dengue can be diagnosed using laboratory tests to determine the presence of dengue antibodies (IgG and IgM) and through polymerase chain reactions (PCR) to determine the presence of the virus. Ideally, these tests must be done within the first few days of the patient presenting symptoms. The tests can be carried out at the local hospital or health clinic.

When we are on the move, it is difficult to ensure we are away from mosquitoes, but today we do have personal mosquito repellents such as Good Knight Fabric Roll on, Cool gel and patches which can be used on us. At home, we can use Good Knight Active+ and if you are living in an area where mosquito population is high, Good knight Fast card can be of great help.

If you need more information on Dengue, the websites of the World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), and The National Vector Borne Disease Control Program of India (NVBDCP) provide updated information on dengue, its symptoms, and treatment.

Remember Prevention is always better than cure. If you develop Dengue symptoms, do not go for over the counter medicines and seek the help of a doctor immediately.
