4 Ways To Stay Safe When Traveling Alone

Travel Experta, Expat Mama, Educator and Entrepreneur - Inspiring Families to New Horizons

Traveling alone is something that has a lot of positive points.  You can enjoy a trip without the stress of anyone else telling you what they think or don’t want.  You can choose exactly what you want to do and where you want to go.

Traveling alone may help you open up in new ways which you never tried before and introduce you to an entirely new way of life.  Along with traveling alone, however, comes a responsibility to be safe and look out for yourself.  Here are some of the best ways that you can ensure your safety during your trip.

Don’t Party Too Hard

Abusing drugs and alcohol in any environment has adverse effects on your safety and overall health.  However, when you travel alone you may be putting yourself in even more danger.

When you don’t have anyone around you who you trust to make sure that you make it home ok you’re risking potentially falling victim to a seriously dangerous situation.

Even though alcohol may be associated with a good time and vacation, it’s important to remember that it can also be dangerous.  Make sure that you do your best to only drink a few rather than drink to the point of being drunk.

Know Your Whereabouts

It’s important to familiarize yourself with your surroundings and ensure that you are looking out for yourself by knowing your whereabouts.  Make sure that you know which areas are known for being less risky and others which you should definitely not walk around alone in past a certain hour.

You can usually find out about these insider tips by visiting forums or asking locals.  Knowing which parts of the town are ok and not will eliminate a huge risk for problems.

Learn Basic Phrases

Knowing how to ask certain phrases like where to find locations will come in handy.  If you find yourself in a dangerous situation and need to be able to receive medical attention or find a policeman, knowing a few basic phrases to let people know you’re in trouble will do a world of good.

You should try to start learning as early as you can before leaving on your trip.  Don’t be nervous to continue practicing as you go so that you can master your language level.  The only way that you’ll progress is through being vulnerable occasionally.

Only Use Verified Taxis

Although it may be hard to tell the difference for some tourists, it’s important to only use verified taxis.

If you use a taxi which isn’t legitimately licensed, then you run the risk of being robbed, or worse, seriously injured or in a dangerous situation that you definitely don’t want to be in.  Paying a bit extra for a real taxi is worth it in the end.
