Rome, Venice, Florence are some of the most unique cities in the world, but there are many other wonderful, albeit less known, places in Italy.
For example, have you ever been to Sardinia? I wanna give you three good reasons to come here if you never visited it, and to come back if you already had this chance. The Region in which I grew up and where I live is an island slightly smaller than Sicily (but bigger than the State of Israel) collocated in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea.
The first reason to see Sardinia is its natural beauty. For many expert voyagers Sardinia has some of the most stunning beaches in the World. Truly, the most famous sea cost area is the Costa Smeralda, well known for the massive presence of international VIPs during the summer season, but many more localities are as much awesome and unique. One of my favourites is Cala Giunco at Villasimius (south - west), where you can also see the flamingos getting tanned at few meters from the sea. My intention is to dedicate an article to this summer paradise, so I won’t enter into much details now.
So, the beaches…there are for any kind of tastes. Some of them extend for miles, like the Cagliari’s beach named Poetto (Cagliari is the capital of the island, my own city); others are just few INCHES LONG and can be reached only from the sea. We have rocky beaches, those with fine sand and those with GROSSA sand. There are places where you can walk just few meters to get rid of the wind (the wind is a friend of Sardinia, but we don’t love it particularly, especially the mistral that comes from North-West. But it helps to mitigate the climate and to keep the sky clean). There are beaches with ONDE (some very good for surfers) and others with the water that doesn’t elevate more than your ankle, where you can play tennis beach. I’ll talk another day about the natural beauties that are not linked to the coast; even the inner part of Sardinia deserves to be carefully explored. To sum it up about Sardinia coast wonders I wanna let you know that the Forte Village has bees voted best resort in the world for the last five or so years. Anything else to say?
The second reason that justifies the ticket to Sardinia is its food. Well, on this topic I bet no one will be disappointed: from fish to meat, Sardinia kitchen is well tuned with the Mediterranean diet, with its richness of flavours, perfumes, sensations. The second entry dish of this week is also dedicated to the Sardinia tradition. One of the most renowned specialties is the “porchetto arrosto” (roasted pig) that is prepared and served all over the island. A curiosity: in just few areas of the inner part of the island, the pig is cooked with an old system, maybe not very practical, but quite suggestive. The animal is wrapped in some herbs and buried under 1 meter of land where it gets naturally cooked. My favourite portion to eat are the “cotenna” (the external meat) and the costole (chops).
Lastly, as some of you may already have understood, the final and winning reason to come in Sardinia are its women. Not that the men are worth nothing, but at the moment they don’t enjoy as much important acknowledgments. The Sardinian beuty is typically Mediterranean, usually not very tall but remarkably proportionate, with huge and expressive eyes, their most easily identifiable feature. Sardinian women speaks with their large, sweet and dreaming eyes. During the last years Sardinian women beauty has been recognized both at national and international level. Alessandra Meloni has won the title of Miss Italia while others have obtained good placements. Giorgia Palmas has reached the second place in the Miss Universo competition. Giorgia has also starred in “Striscia la notizia” one of Italy’s most successful TV show. She worked in the Canale 5 show immediately after another Sardinian gorgeous lady, Elisabetta Canalis, probably my favourite (after my woman of course!!). It looks like in this show Sardinian ladies are the favourite ones, because also today starring is a 20 years old beauty of my land.

La Sardegna
Roma, Firenze, Venezia sono tra le più straordinarie città al modo. Ma ci sono molti altri posti meravigliosi, benchè meno conosciuti, in Italia.
Per esempio, siete mai stati in Sardegna? Vi voglio dare almeno tre buone ragioni per venirci se non ci siete mai stati e per ritornarci se l’avete già visitata. La regione in cui sono nato e vissuto è un’isola poco più piccola della Sicilia (ma, per fare un esempio, più grande dello Stato d’Israele) situata al centro del Mar Mediterraneo.
La prima ragione per venirci è la sua bellezza. La Sardegna dispone a detta di molti esperti viaggiatori di alcune delle spiagge più belle al mondo. Naturalmente la zona costiera più famosa è la Costa Smeralda, celebre per l’abbondanza di Vip durante l’estate, ma molte altre località sono altrettanto meravigliose e uniche. Una delle mie favorite è la spiaggia del Giunco a Villasimius (sud est), dove si possono anche vedere i fenicotteri rosa prendere il sole a pochi metri dal mare. A Villasimuis ho intenzione di dedicare un articolo a parte quindi non rimango a descriverla ulteriormente. Le spiagge dunque; c’è ne per tutti i gusti. Lunghe chilometri come il Poetto di Cagliari, la capitale della Regione Sardegna, o pochi metri come l’infinito numero di calette raggiungibili solamente dal mare. Ci sono quelle rocciose, quelle con la sabbia fine, quelle con la sabbia grossa. Ci sono località dove ci si può spostare di pochi metri per rimanere coperti dal vento. (Il vento è un amico della Sardegna; a noi sardi non piace molto, specialmente il maestrale che soffia da nord-ovest. Ma favorisce un clima temperato e assolutamente poco nuvoloso.) Ci sono spiagge con le onde (alcune ottime per i surfisti) e altre con l’acqua bassa fino alle caviglie, dove si può camminare o giocare con le racchette. Parlerò un’altra volta sulle bellezze che non sono necessariamente legate alla costa; anche l’interno della Sardegna merita di essere visitato a lungo. Per finire sulle bellezze costiere ricordo che il Forte Village Resort è votato da oltre cinque anni come il migliore resort al mondo!!! Cos’altro aggiungere?
La seconda ragione per cui vale la pena venire in Sardegna è il suo cibo. Beh, su questo fronte nessuno rimarrà insoddisfatto: dal pesce alla carne la Sardegna in cucina rispetta tutti i crismi della dieta mediterranea, con la sua ricchezza di sapori, profumi e sensazioni. La ricetta di questa settimana è appunto dedicata ad un secondo della cucina sarda. Una delle specialità più rinomate è il porchetto arrosto, che viene preparato e servito in tutte le zone dell’isola. Una curiosità: in poche aree dell’interno il porchetto viene cucinato con un vecchio sistema forse poco pratico ma molto suggestivo. L’animale viene avvolto tra delle erbe e sotterrato a circa 1 metro di profondità in buche che vengono riscaldate dalla superficie. Le mie parti preferite del porchetto sono la cotenna e le costolette.
Infine, come alcuni avranno certamente capito, l’ultima e vincente ragione per visitare la mia terra sono le sue donne. Non che gli uomini siano da buttare via, ma al momento non godono di riconoscimenti altrettanto rimarcabili. La bellezza sarda è tipicamente mediterranea, a volte minuta di statura ma decisamente proporzionata, con grandi ed espressivi occhi che ne fanno la caratteristica più facilmente riconoscibile. Le donne sarde parlano con gli occhi, larghi dolci e sognanti. Negli ultimi anni la bellezza delle donne sarde è stata riconosciuta sia nel concorso Miss Italia che è stato vinto da Alessandra Meloni e dove altre mie conterranee hanno ottenuto ottimi piazzamenti, sia a livello internazionale; Giorgia Palmas è arrivata seconda a Miss Universo. Sempre la stessa Giorgia è stata velina in televisione, subito dopo la splendida Sassarese Elisabetta Canalis alla quale vanno le mie preferenze (dopo la mia donna ovviamente!!). Sembra che al programma di Canale 5 le sarde piacciano molto perché anche quest’anno una delle due veline è appunto sarda: Melisa Satta.
