Getting to Nuoro and its surroundings by car

The following are some suggested routes starting from Tortolì to get to Nuoro and the surroundings areas directly by renting a car in Nuoro:
Dorgali – This beautiful town is located on the eastern coast of Sardinia in the province of Nuoro and it is accessible following the SS 125 northwards.

Apart from its small Museum, the centre is renowned for its handicrafts such as carpets and ceramics or the many gastronomic products. Nearby, in the municipality of Dorgali, is Cala Gonone, a suggestive seaside resort famous for its beaches.

After Dorgali, continuing in the direction of Orosei, you can Visit the wonderful caves of Ispinigoli, one of the largest grottoes in the island where you can find some spectacular stalactites and stalagmites, the tallest in Europe, measuring about 38 m in total.

Orgosolo murals in Sardinia

Orgosolo – It can be reached by taking the road to Villagrande Strisaili that connects to the 389 expressway which leads to Nuoro.

The town is in the middle of Barbagia, part of the Gennargentu Park. It is worth a visit in order to appreciate the many beautiful “Murals“, drawings made between the sixties and the seventies on the wall of the houses, designed to denounce social injustice, intolerance and oppression suffered by the people of this place evoked by far and recent news events.

Can also be found Murals on recent and international events. Fonni, a nearby location, is also recommended for a visit.

Sardinian food

Oliena – It can be reached along the SS 125 northwards. You will find the directions for Oliena after Dorgali.

This location in Barbagia is most famous for custom hand-embroidered Sardinian shawls, good Nepente wine, cheeses, pastries and Carasau bread, ancient courtyards. Nearby are the Gologone sources, the largest ones in Sardinia, from which flows pure mineral water.

The namesake restaurant is renowned at the national level.

Nuoro – It can be reached by taking the road to Villagrande Strisaili, which connects to the 389 expressway that leads to Nuoro.

You can visit the Archaeological Museum, the Popular traditions Museum, the House of Grazia Deledda, the Chiesa delle Grazie built in the seventeenth century.

On the Mount Ortobene, in the park, a must to see is the Statue of the Redeemer, which overlooks the city. Important is also the new MAN Museum, which houses numerous exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.
