5 Weird Myths About Sydney - Busted

Australia’s crazy big smoke, Melbournes rival in all things, I am sure you have heard the stories. What is it about Sydney that everyone loves so much?  Have you ever considered researching is myths and legends that surround the town you are travelling to? Scotland has the Loch Ness monster, and the Caribbean has the Bermuda Triangle.  So what are the common myths and legends surrounding the stunning city of Sydney?

 1. Sydney Is The Capital Of Australia?

Now, this is a common mistake made by many visitors to Australia. Sadly Sydney is not the Capital of Australia. When they hear this, most then think Melbourne is the Capital. In fact, it is neither, Canberra is the major political city of Down Under. Rumour has it when deciding which city would take the great honour of the Capital, both Melbourne and Sydney fought hard. Eventually, they agreed to make a whole new city halfway between the two, thus creating the glorious Canberra.

2.  The Infamous Blue Mountain Panther Resides in the Hills and Crawls the City Street at Night

Okay so not technically in Sydney, but just outside of this great town lies the magnificent Blue Mountain Ranges. Both locals and visitors have claimed to have seen a mysteriously large cat roaming in the area, often being compared to a panther. Australian scientists are yet to declare the outbreak of a large cat species and therefore this myth seems highly unlikely.

3. Abandoned Rail Tunnels - Is There Really A Monster Down There?

Now this one also seems too good to be true. There are unused abandoned railway tunnels under Sydney CBD, however, reports state that there is a large hair-free monster living in these tunnels. Hollywood turned this into a movie, which leaves some to question its validity. Another theory is that the abandoned rail tunnels are home to a mass drug scheme, but the police are yet to uncover this as well.

4. The Sydney Harbour Bridge Is Made Of Bodies

The Sydney Harbour Bridge is known as one of Sydney’s most visited attractions, but what many don’t know is that the bridge could contain human remains! Construction of the large attraction began in 1923 and took nearly ten years to complete. During this time there were 16 recorded deaths of construction workers, whose bodies were covered up and placed into the pylons of the bridge.  You’ll never be able to look at the bridge the same way.

5. Macquarie Fields Train Station - See the Sweet Spirits of Sydney

Ghost hunters have been fascinated by the mystery of the Macquarie Field Train Station for years. Some people allege that there are often sounds similar to that of a woman crying, and occasionally loveable ghosts appear on the train platform. They never interfere with us mere mortals, however, don’t be surprised if you see these unidentified spirits on the train platform South West of the city.  Can’t make it to platform 9 and ¾? Not a worry, Sydney has got your back.
