Usually, when it comes to website designers, you would think that they have no link to SEO (Search Engine Optimization). However, having knowledge of SEO is useful because not only does SEO allows visitors to find your website with relative ease using keywords, but that designers are able to optimize their web content.

So today, we thought that why not share with you some of the most important and frequently used SEO terms that every designer should know. Once you are familiar with these terms, you will not only be able to understand what the SEO experts are trying to say, but it will also help you to improve your work since you will be better able to explain yourself and what it is that you are looking for.

  • 301 Redirect – Way to redirect a visitor to another page.
  • ALT Text – Text you add as a description of an image on your website since images are not readable by the search engines.
  • B2B – Business to Business
  • B2C – Business to Customer
  • BOT (crawler, spider, robot) – A program that allows search engines to scan webpage’s content.
  • Bounce Rate – Percentage of users who leave your site immediately without checking out or clicking on the other pages/links of your website.
  • GYM – No, it’s not what you think. GYM here stands for the 3 major search engines Google, Yahoo and Microsoft.
  • Index – A database of the web pages along with their content.
  • Keyword – What you are searching for, a specific word or phrase that you type into the search engines.
  • Keyword Density – Percentage of how many times a keyword is used on a website.
  • KCI –Keyword Competitive Index, used to measure the monthly searches of a keyword as compared to the actual demand for that keyword.
  • Link Building – Linking your webpage to external sites which helps to build trust and increase page ranking.
  • Meta Description – It’s that description of around 160 words that show up about your website on the search engine results.
  • Page Rank – A number between 0 and 10 which Google assigns to determine a link’s popularity and trust.
  • SERP – Search Engine Ranking Page is basically that page that you see displaying results after you run a query on a search engine.
  • Traffic – All the users who visit your website.
  • Web 2.0 – Web activity that is used to increase and encourage user interaction.
  • XML Sitemap – File which acts as a map to search engine of the URLs of your site.
