Save £100s on your energy bills in minutes

When did you last Switch your energy bills? This year, last year? Or can you even remember doing it?

If you haven’t switched your supplier recently, you could be missing out on some huge savings. That’s because you might not be on your energy supplier’s cheapest Deal. You could be spending £100s more than you need to. uSwitch.com estimates that customers could save as much as £618 just by switching their gas and electricity tariffs.

Whether you’re a renter or a homeowner, you should still be able to switch to save. Take a look below to find out how to do this without any hassle and how to get the best deal.

Switch and save

The easiest way to switch to a better energy deal is to go through a price comparison website like uSwitch or MoneySuperMarket. These compare a range of deals available in your area so you can see the cheapest option they have available for you.

It’s worth keeping in mind that some providers will only let you switch to them directly rather than through a comparison site. So whilst they may be your cheapest option, you would have to handle the switch yourself rather than letting the comparison site handle it for you. Many comparison sites do have an option to show all deals available so that you can make an informed decision. And it’s worth noting that some have preferred suppliers which may mean you don’t get to see all deals available.

Who can switch?

Don’t assume that you can’t switch if you’re on a prepayment energy meter. You could still switch to another supplier. You may not be able to get access to all of the best deals that those on standard energy meters can get, of course. But you still might be able to save based on what you’re paying at the moment.

And if you’re on Economy 7, yes, you can switch too. Economy 7 is a tariff where you pay a different price for energy depending on whether it’s day or night.Just make sure you click only to compare with other Economy 7 tariffs.

As we mentioned above, you should still be able to switch your bills if you’re a renter – the fact that you don’t own your home shouldn’t make any difference. It’s worth giving your landlord a heads-up when you do this – they might need to update this in their records.

The only time when your landlord can stop you switching to a cheaper supplier is if they pay the energy bills for you. So if you just pay them some extra money on top of your rent to cover bills, they don’t have to switch your supplier.

Save time too

Don’t be put off switching because you think it will be a huge ordeal. You won’t need to know lots of personal details or complicated info. All you’ll need to know is your postcode and your current supplier.

If you know your current tariff and how much energy you use in a year, great! This will help the comparison site give you more accurate deals. But don’t worry if you don’t have this – the site can estimate your bills based on the size of your house and how many people you live with.

The whole process of switching will only take a few minutes – most comparison sites will quote a time of around 10 to 15 minutes. If you’ve got a few extra minutes spare, compare gas and electricity bills separately as well as combined ‘dual fuel’ deals – this can sometimes be cheaper.

Lastly, all you‘ll need to do is accept the new tariff and you’ll switch – the comparison site will do the work for you! It really is as easy as that.

Just make sure you check whether you’re still on a fixed energy price tariff. If you are, you may not be able to switch from this without paying exit fees until you’re at the end of your fixed deal.
