New school of baking to teach less fortunate

New School Of Baking To Teach Less Fortunate

After several years of proving its devotion to assisting impoverished individuals in the Eastern Cape, the Al Fidaa Foundation is at it yet again.

Since its inception in August 2008, the non-profit organisation (NPO) has only added to its initiatives to help others.

Today it runs about 45 soup kitchens and various social welfare initiatives and offers a range of skills development and education programmes. One of their newest endeavours is the Al Fidaa School of Baking which opened on August 7.

The free four-week course seeks to teach students from disadvantaged communities how to bake and decorate so that they may use the skills to earn an income.

Clare Russell, a graduate of the Capsicum Culinary Studio, tutors them in baking and decorating cupcakes, cakes and biscuits.

The products that are baked by the students during the course are donated to old age homes and orphanages in Port Elizabeth.

According to the Al Fidaa Foundation, the reason the students are taught to bake various treats is because it offers them the chance to start their own business by becoming home bakers.

“They do not need a formal education to earn a stable income and they can start a business without worrying about large overhead costs.”

There are also many items a home baker can make without the use of an oven or blender, which many of the students do not own.

Each four-week course teaches six disadvantaged students from Nelson Mandela Bay from Monday to Thursday.

The Al Fidaa Foundation will also be hosting a workshop to teach the mastering of buttercream skills for cupcakes on Fridays from September 8. All the proceeds generated by these workshops will be ploughed back into the School of Baking.
