Health Benefits of Cinnamon

One of the first thing to know is that there are two types of CinnamonCeylon cinnamon, known as 'true' cinnamon and Cassia cinnamon, which is the most common one that you buy in the supermarket, although a mixture of both is often found.

Cinnamon is produced from the inner bark of cinnamon trees, when cut into strips and dried it curls forming cinnamon sticks, which can be ground to form cinnamon powder.

For 1000's of years it has been used for medical purposes.
There is still apparently a long way to go with scientific testing, but the tests so far support quite a few of the Health Benefits that have  previously been claimed.

  • It has beaten super foods such as garlic and oregano with regards to it's antioxidant properties.
  • Studies has shown that cinnamon has powerful anti-inflammatory properties.
  • 1 gram a day of cinnamon can show beneficial effects on blood markers, which is good for type 2 diabetes.
  • It can reduce 'LDL' (Bad) cholesterol and triglycerides, while at the same time keeping the HDL (Good) cholesterol stable.
  • There are several on going studies with regard to the helpfulness of cinnamon for treating Parkinson,Alzheimer's and cancer. Controlled human testing needs to be carried out before any conclusive results can be made.
  • It is said to have many Health benefits, but a great deal more testing needs to be done before any conclusions can be made.

Healthy benefits to one side cinnamon is a great spice for use in creating great flavors when cooking or baking.
