The Art of Now

Life is made up of a thousand things but what it is defined by is a succession of moments. Those moments that we share with family and friends, the moments of growth and even the moments of pain. Each and every one is as precious as a diamond, but their value can sometimes be lost when we forget to live in the now and be mindful in all that we are doing and experiencing.

As humans we have a unique evolutionary Ability to be able to think about the past, to try and forecast the future and even imagine the impossible. This higher level consciousness is one of our defining strengths, however, it can also be our biggest weakness if we use this ability too much. So much so that some believe that if we live in the past it can cause depression, if we live in the future it can cause anxiety and internal peace is only achieved if we can live in the present. So what does it mean to live in the present?

With presence, brings an openness that allows us to be Witness to so much more beauty in life. If your days are anything like ours, sometimes they can be non-stop from the moment we wake up, right up until our head hits the pillow at night. On days like these the main goal is to just try and make it through. The mind is on a repetitive cycle of thinking about what comes next and ticking off mental checklists. Whilst there is a need to plan and set goals, allowing too much space for anticipating future events can bring up both dread and stress. We can miss such obvious opportunities that are right in front of us and also some of the most beautiful moments, because our minds are too focused on its own illusions.

‘There is more to life than just speed’ ~ Ghandi

Sometimes all we need to do to gain back control over chattering minds is to pause, be present, breathe deeply and watch our mind relax. Pausing momentarily before you take that first sip of your matcha or even right before you turn on the ignition in your car offers up the space to notice so much more outside of our repetitive thoughts. It allows us to ignite all the senses and be witness to every sight and sound.

‘Act without expectation’ ~ Lao Tzu

We sometimes also need to be prepared to let go of expectation. Unreasonably high expectations often create a demand of yourself, and those around you. This can be a great cause of stress especially if you have given yourself a deadline or if things don’t go as planned. So just enjoy things as they are, try to find the fun in the situation rather than disappointment and be prepared to modify what you may have been expecting. Otherwise you can never truly appreciate the beauty of what is right in front of you.

So join us in a matcha moment today and take back control, quieten the mind and make the most of every moment, every day.
