- The Sumatran wild cat is one of five rare cat species photographed.
Good news/bad news this morning from the Indonesian Island of Sumatra.
The good news is that hidden cameras recently Photographed five of the islands seven species of wildcats. The bad news is that the area these rare cats were photographed in is an unprotected forested habitat corridor linking a wildlife sanctuary and a forest.
The Jakarta Post reports that World Wildlife Fund researchers (WWF) photographed the Sumatran tiger (Panther Tigris Sumatra), clouded leopard (Novelist nebulous), marbled cat (Pardofelis marmorata), golden cat (Catopuma Temmincki) and leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis). Habitat encroachment and destruction is the reason for the decline of these cats in the wild. In the case of the Sumatran wild cats their habitat is being cleared for logging, pulp, paper and palm oil industries.
