Humans have been known to sought something greater than themselves, to answer the fundamental questions of existence. For some, faith is based on sacred texts and quotes, coming together as a religion. But for Matt Liston, it's based on the creation of the mysterious Satoshi Nakamoto: the blockchain.
Liston is a former CEO of cryptocurrency company Augur. He collaborated with artist Avery Singer at New York's New Museum to found a blockchain-based religion called 0xΩ, pronounced “Zero Ex Omega”. Singer joined Liston to create the religious iconography for the project which takes form as a narwhal with a doge head, a beret, tattoos, an infinity tail, an ethereum logo.
At the New Museum, she presented the art piece that she hopes will be used as 0xΩ’s first Sacred Object. She suggested that the "Dogewhal" can be used as "a form of prayer."
According to Liston who claimed to be the "Cryptoprophet":
Liston said the similarities between religious belief and the evangelical fervor associated with cryptocurrencies inspired him to create 0xΩ.
"The store value of cryptocurrencies is solely dependent on how much other people believe they should have value," he said. "It's in this feedback loop of belief that operates like a religious system." This is where he describes the project as a way to “incentivize mindshare.”
At its core, 0xΩ is centered on a use of the blockchain that Liston hopes will spearhead the technology's potential. Liston envisions 0xΩ commissioning art through the blockchain.
"We want to bring in new types of thinking and push the boundaries for what the technologies can be used for," said Liston. "I'm obsessed and very driven by what these technologies can do, but I'm bored with it being a space that's dominated by engineers and finance people."
Liston presents both a blockchain system for pre-established religions, and a new faith of its own.
In 2017, an AI developer that worked for Uber, Anthony Lewandowski, created an AI-based religion called “Way of The Future".
