Email has been one of the greatest way to reach people personally and professionally. But the thing about it is that it's kind of constrained.

Here is where Google wants to change. With Gmail, which already has more than a billion users, Google is bringing its its Accelerate Mobile Pages (AMP) which was originally designed to speed up websites by stripping down the unnecessary clutter, to make email faster.

But also more interactive.

Because AMP can update dynamically, users don't have to refresh the page waiting for a response to come through. This makes it possible for users to take simple actions - like answering a survey or scheduling an appointment, booking a hotel, browse and interact with content or filling out a form - without the need to click a link or visit another website.

Initially, companies developing features for AMP for Email include Pinterest, Booking.com, and Doodle.

In an example shown below, an email from Pinterest would allow users to browse through images and click on them for more details - just like they normally would on the website - but directly inside the email.

"Today, we’re bringing the power of AMP to email through the Gmail Developer Preview of AMP for Email - a new way for developers to make emails more interactive and engaging," said Gmail product manager Aakash Sahney. "With AMP for Email, it’s easy for information in email messages to be dynamic, up-to-date and actionable."

The idea to implement AMP straight into Gmail comes after Google revealed its new AMP story format, which aims to empower creators to build image, video, and animation intensive experiences for mobile.

AMP for Email is open-sourced so developers can learn and develop the technology and use it to their advantage.
