Twitter Updated Its Terms Of Service, And Able To Remove Extremists' Contents Better

The microblogging platform Twitter has released its biannual transparency report.

In one section, it detailed requests it receives from government officials around the world to remove content that violates the site’s Terms of Service. Particularly regarding terrorism.

According to Twitter, it receives 80 percent fewer TOS requests relating to extremists and terrorism due to its more vigorous attempts on internal checks and blocking accounts.

The biannual report covers the period from January 1, 2017 to June 30. During that time, Twitter received 338 reports on 1,200 accounts. That is a decrease from previous report when Twitter received 716 reports. It's also a huge reduction considering that in 2016, Twitter Received Reports on 5,929 accounts.

Using its internal system, Twitter's Public Policy said that 95 percent of the time, it was able to detect potentially troubling accounts. The system was able to eliminate about three-quarter of them, before they even post their first tweet.

In total, the microblogging platform said that it had removed 299,649 accounts from the site during the reporting period.

On its updated Terms of Service, Twitter has expanded the section regarding TOS requests that covered only "promotion of terrorism" in the last transparency report, to include new categories such as "Abusive Content," "Copyright," and "Trademark."

Twitter said that government TOS requests for removing terrorist's promotion content accounted to only two percent, and Twitter was able to take down 92 percent of that. In short, Twitter touted victories in the battle against tweets promoting extremist's contents, by saying that it has been vanquishing those kinds of accounts before governments even ask.

A vast majority of takedown requests were filed under "Abusive Content," but Twitter only complied to 12 percent of that.

Twitter has been under pressure to prevent itself from being used as a platform for spreading hate or recruiting people to jihadist causes.

The company is classifying terror-related accounts as those "that actively incite or promote violence associated with internationally recognized terrorist organizations, promote internationally recognized terrorist organizations, and accounts attempting to evade prior enforcement."
