September 16th Working Parents Day

Even though some companies still find it hard to believe, expert studies suggest that parents are better employees in some fields. This might be especially true concerning mothers. While few employers will admit publicly that they feel like moms will be more committed to their children than their positions within the company, some studies show that this bias still exists in some workplaces.

The Journal of Social Sciences published a study on how mothers are often penalized for having children. Employers are less likely to hire them, and if they do it is often for less pay than for women that don’t have children. The study went on to show that the pay could be 5 to 7 percent less for mothers. It also indicated that men do not have this problem, even if they are fathers. A study titles “Getting a Job: Is There a Motherhood Penalty” concluded that moms now account for the largest gap in wages.

While it might be true that women could request more time off when they are also mothers, there is also evidence to support the claim that they could become an invaluable part of the team. Here are only 3 of the many ways hiring a parent could be a wise choice for your company.

  1. Productivity

Research shows that mothers and fathers are more productive at their jobs. While this might not always be true when kids are younger, the loss in productivity is temporary. The study from the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis found that men and women have extra motivation when they are parents. Not only are they taking care of themselves, but now they are thinking about their children’s security. This is enough to ensure that parents will continuously strive to succeed at their careers.

  1. Multi-task and Manage Time

Parents already know that there isn’t enough time in the day to accomplish everything, which is why they become adept at multi-tasking. Learning to manage their time is one of the first things every parent deals with, and this can translate into their performance at work. Having a dedicated employee that knows how to get everything done during the day is an invaluable asset to any business.

  1. Empathy

Employees that are also parents have more empathy, according to some studies. This can improve the attitude at work. When employees sympathize with each other it is easier for them to work together as a team. If the manager is also a parent, their empathy can inspire loyalty. All of this can benefit the company

September 16th is Working Parents Day and this year take time to acknowledge the moms and dads that make up an important part of your team.
