U.S. District Judge Jon S. Tigar of San Francisco issued an order Monday temporarily barring the Trump Administration from denying Asylum to migrants if they crossed the US-Mexican border without inspection. This order presently impedes Trump’s immigration crackdown as Central American migrants are making their way to the border. Despite Trump’s setback, this case will continue to move through the courts for another hearing.

“Whatever the scope of the President’s authority, he may not rewrite the immigration laws to impose a condition that Congress has expressly forbidden,” the Washington Post quoted of the judge’s reasoning.

As a result of the order, migrants are free for now to seek asylum at legal entry points or after crossing the border into the U.S. without inspection.
