Will the Peugeot 508 GT get a 224 kW PHEV System?

The Peugeot 508 sedan and wagon are the flagship cars of the range, and there could be exciting days ahead. A recent UK report from Autocar has claimed that an upcoming Peugeot 508 could have an electrified flagship GT performance variant. The core 508 sedan was revealed back in February, and this was followed by the touring wagon reveal in June. At the moment we have no firm idea on when this new 508 GT will be revealed. However, there are a few things that we do know, and we can make some educated guesses.

The Peugeot 508 GT

The Peugeot 508, Perth drivers are looking forward to is set to be released here in the first half of 2019. The most powerful petrol Engine will be a 1.6 litre turbocharged four cylinder power plant that generates 168 kW of power, and this will be paired with an eight speed automatic front wheel transmission. If it is made and available here, the Peugeot 508 GT will be a very different beast engine wise. According to Autocar, an industry insider has claimed that the 508 GT will pair a 1.6 litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor that uses a Lithium Ion Battery system.

A Closer Look at the Engine

This petrol engine would be capable of generating 149 kW (200bhp), and it would drive the front wheels only. An additional 75 kW of power (100bhp) would be available for the rear axle thanks to the electric motor. Together, the petrol and electric motors would provide a combined system output of around 224kW (300bhp). At the moment, we have no confirmation of the capacity for the lithium ion battery system so it can be hard to make predictions. However, the current rumour is that the 508 GT will be able to travel 50 km purely on electric power if required.

The EMP2 Platform

Peugeot is now using the EMP2 platform to underpin many of their latest and upcoming car releases. The adoption of this platform will allow the manufacturer to introduce similar PHEV (hybrid) technology in other PSA Group vehicles. This could include cars, such as the DS7 Crossback E-Tense, the Peugeot 3008 and the 5008 SUV crossovers. This level of flexibility in engine choices could make for some interesting car purchasing decisions in 2019.
