Artificial intelligence, the double-edged sword that holds cybersecurity experts in suspense

Eight out of ten cybersecurity officers (82%, to be exact) are concerned about the expectation that cybercriminals will use Artificial Intelligence against their company, a new study says.

Nobody escapes that the mass arrival of artificial intelligence (a trend that, on the other hand, has been going on for several decades) will cause a noticeable  impact in areas such as cybersecurity.  Not in vain, many experts have deposited in the AI many of their hopes when predicting potential cyberthreats , although there are many voices -like ESET- that have warned of a possible bubble around these conflicts.

In any case, whether the change generated by artificial Intelligence in this field is greater or lesser, what is certain is that this disruption will be a double-edged sword . And it is that, as it says the third Law of Newton, to all action it follows an opposite reaction and of equal magnitude.

With this, and landing in the case at hand, we would be faced with an element that can help maintain a secure network, predict patterns to avoid intrusions, improve identity management, the massive analysis of malware samples … but it can also be used as a tool by cybercriminals to increase the effectiveness and sophistication of their attacks.

A fledgling phenomenon that is already beginning to be reflected in the periodic surveys that security houses do among the CSO / CISO around the world. This is the case of the latest international cybernetic index of Neustar, according to which more than eight out of ten responsible for the area (82%, to be more exact) are concerned about the expectation that cybercriminals use artificial intelligence against their company . In particular, it is worrying that this may cause data loss (50%), as well as the confidence of its customers, business performance or the direct costs of overcoming the attack promoted by IA.

“There is a great opportunity available, but as we have seen today with these data, we are at a crossroads. Organizations know the benefits, but they are also aware that today’s attackers have unique capabilities to cause destruction with that same technology. As a result, they have reached a point where they are not sure if artificial intelligence is a friend or an enemy, “reads the report.
