Stable Food Supply – Need of the Hour

The world population is increasing at an alarming rate. According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA), the current world population of 7.3 billion is expected to reach 8.5 billion by 2030, 9.7 billion in 2050 and 11.2 billion in 2100. Most of this is expected or likely to occur in the developing countries like India, Nigeria, China, and Brazil and so on where more and more people prefer to live in urban areas with high income. The total food production must therefore increase to meet the projected food supply of this growing world.

Major role of milk in food supply

Milk is one of the most nutritious foods available to the humankind and contributes significantly to the human diet. It provides protein, fat vitamins B2, B12, calcium, phosphorus and a number of other nutrients. The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) considers milk of such importance in human nutrition that it recommends 2-3 servings of milk or other products every day. Since its inception, milk has been considered as a wholesome food to mankind.

Production and consumption of dairy products

Billions of people around the world consume milk and Dairy Products every day. However, milk is a perishable product in itself. A lot of milk processing plants are used to increase the shelf life of dairy products. Dairy products are not only a vital source of nutrition for people, but are also a medium which provides livelihood opportunities for farmers, processors, shopkeepers and other stakeholders who play a very essential role in the dairy value chain.

Producing larger quantities of milk in the long term requires that all stake holders in the dairy farming and dairy products industry must learn to be more productive. This productivity must be efficient in ways that use fewer natural resources and safeguard animal well-being including every other parameter encompassed while producing the necessary financial returns. In other words, establishing a Stable Food Supply requires sustainable and economical farming and production techniques.

Primary Objective

The chief objective is to reduce the negative impact on the environment. This must be done by keeping in mind the profitability and well-being of animals and human beings involved. At the same time it’s imperative to give due attention to sustainability of milk and its products which involve manufacturing and dairy farming.

Further, the increased population with the growing trend towards urbanization would bring several demographic changes in our society. It is undeniable that there is going to be an ever increasing demand of milk and dairy products in India and other parts of world. This will call for higher production with improved standards in terms of hygiene, safety and quality of food products which will be a principal demand.
