National Cleaning Week & The Psychology of Clean

National Cleaning Week Happening Now …

National Cleaning Week is the fourth week of March every year. For cleaning professionals, and everyone really, it’s a good time to mark your calendar and set aside time to methodically and deliberately get things done.

You know, maybe take down those Christmas lights, ditch the Valentine’s Chocolates & frilly heart box, an oh, that carpet after St. Paddy’s, yeah that.

Plus all of the other remnants of a long winter, bits of dust, dirt, grit, grime, and cobwebs – being perfectly obvious everywhere – taking up residence without your consent.

Psychology of Spring Cleaning

There’s a psychological element associated with a good spring cleaning as well. Spring is our reminder to get a new jump-start on life, to rev up our engines and run with the wind. Decluttering, organizing, and cleaning our space eliminates the fog of a weary winter brain and creates a clean mental slate.

Of course, we understand the obvious benefits of sparkling clean surfaces, pristine organization, and a fresh clean open space. What may be more important is this – a fresh spring clean can improve mood, decrease stress levels, heighten awareness and increase creativity.

Chaos & Clutter

For businesses, it’s been proven that the presence of clutter increases stress levels. Clutter distracts and overwhelms the senses resulting in compromised productivity.

Clutter in the home has similar effects. Chaos caused by too much clutter compromises the health and well being of the family unit. Where peace and harmony should live, chaos creates havoc. If a family can’t have a clean, fresh home and refuge from the world, what is left?

An entire society in clutter chaos, that’s what. A bad idea. A very bad idea.

The objective of cleaning is not just to clean, but to feel happiness living within that environment. – Marie Kondo

So, get on the happy wagon of National Cleaning Week and do your part to save the world one clean house at a time and be happy.

Clean = Healthy

In addition to decreased stress levels, elevated mood and heightened creativity, spring cleaning affects your health. According to Psychology Today: “… Several psychologists and cleaning experts report that they see clients who take charge of cleaning and organizing also take charge of their general health …”

You heard it from the experts, the positive results of a clean environment is good for the mind, body, and spirit. Clean freaks unite!

Win-Win

It’s a win-win situation all the way around. When your environment is clean and fresh you become calm and feel better physically. Is there any good reason you’d dismiss the idea that spring cleaning is a really, really good thing?

Maybe you need just the right mix and match of awesome cleaning products & supplies. Hey, that’s where we come in! You have the motivation, we have the solutions to make it happen, including green seal certified cleaning products. But I digress, kind of.

Just Do It!

Back to the nuts of bolts of making it happen. While organizing and discarding items might not be at the top of your list of fun things to do, long-term psychological effects are an excellent reason to give it a go. Remember, happy, creative and healthy?

You Are Not Alone

Most Americans count keeping their home clean and organized among one of their top 5 stressors. Within this group, women are especially vulnerable to chronic levels of cortisol, a stress hormone, when they feel their home is too cluttered.

What a surprise, right? Not really, we knew it all along, but it’s absolutely accurate.

You know the scene, dining room table piled high with stacks of pretty pictures and not so pretty unpaid bills, unmade beds, clothes in heaps everywhere, a smell that you can’t quite identify or place. This my friend just might be your moment of clarity, oooee, that smell, can’t you smell that smell?
