In September an Italian woman married herself in a lavish Ceremony complete with white dress, bridesmaids and multi-tiered cake. Missing were a groom, groomsmen and a marriage license. The trend, called "sologamy," is becoming increasingly popular in Europe and Japan.
The ceremony, designed to affirm one's comfort with her single state and to allow the "bride" to experience the ceremony and ensuing festivities associated with a traditional wedding, is not for everyone. (Rarely do you hear of a man marrying himself.) The "bride" needs to be comfortable with herself, have supportive family and friends and the funds to pull it off. The ceremony is not legal. Rather, it is a unique way to party with family and friends.
So what is next? How about a faux baby shower or grandparents celebration when one has little or no hope of becoming a parent or grandparent?
