Living a Greener Life! Trying Glugglug Reusable Straws

Having kids really made me look at the sheer amount of waste we produce as a family. It’s not just nappies, it’s the other things like the endless containers of snacks and drinks and all the plastic rubbish you accumulate over time.

So I began to look at fairly straight forward ways that we could cut down. One easy way is using reusuabel Straws.  I actually bought a few years ago when someone recommend ‘hot straws’ to me for drinking tea and coffee, as it minimises teeth staining – great but I soon forgot to use them.

Now with the straws, I actually used to buy the bags of 100 from Ikea so it seemed like a perfect thing to substitute. Glugglug make resusuable straws and glasses and contacted me on Instagram to see if I wanted to try some straws, so I figured – why not? If we were going to drop this properly then we’d need a decent supply so I wouldn’t be tempted to pick up a disposable one.

They rather aptly come in these paper envelopes which I love. Let me talk you through the different types of straws they have:

1. Aluminium (comes in blue and purple) in a set of 4.

These metal ones keep your drinks cooler for a longer time.  It has rounded edges so that you shouldn’t cut yourself on them – I quite like to use the metal ones with my hot drinks (obviously taking care that the drink isn’t too hot).

2. Silicone Straw – Standard Width (orange)

Standard, good for most drinks. They can also be cut to size for small kids for example.

3. Silicone Straw – Wide (green)

These are good for thicker drinks like smoothies for example, or soup (good for people who may need to have soup through a straw).

ALL of the straws are BPA free, food grade, good for the dishwasher etc. Also each sets come with a brush which is essential for cleaning out any heavier drinks (for example, my kids love chocolate milk).

Width comparison:

I even bought a posh BEAST reusable cup so that I could use it with these straws thats how much I like them.

These straws have been incorporated well in to our routine, because they are so easy to wash it’s not much effort at all to use these instead of using plastic one use straws. I highly recommend buying some (there are other brands out there of course but I have found the Glugglug ones to wash well (no fading or tarnishing).

The silicone straws are £9.95 on Amazon (comes in 2 shades) and the Aluminium straws are currently just £6.35.
