Treating Inner Ear Problems

Inner ear disorders are common at all ages, and especially among those 65 years and older. The inner ear consists of:

  • Cochlea and auditory nerve transform sound waves into electrical impulses sent to the brain
  • Vestibular system contains receptors that control equilibrium and balance

What are symptoms of inner ear disorders?
These may include dizziness, vertigo, imbalance, disequilibrium, lightheadedness, hearing loss, fullness in the ears, or tinnitus, a ringing in the ears.

What do I do if I have symptoms of an inner ear disorder?
If you have any of these symptoms, start with a visit to your primary care provider. Common conditions such as a viral infection might be the cause and can be treated with antivirals. If the problem appears more complex, your provider may suggest a referral to a neurologist/otoneurologist for further evaluation.

What is an otoneurologist?
An otoneurologist is a neurologist who has special training with the inner ear and vestibular system. As with all neurologists, an otoneurologist can help with the diagnosis, treatment, and management of inner Ear Disorders.

C. Andrew Sales MD is a board certified neurologist with a subspecialty practice in otoneurology. His practice covers the broad scope of general neurology. Dr. Sales welcomes patient referrals at The Polyclinic at 206-860-4542.
