Creating your own company video – Part 3 Writing a script for your video introduction

This is the third part in our series on making your own video introductions to include at the start of your video interviews.  In this part, I’ll give you some tips on what you should include in your script.

We’ve already talked about how preparation is key when making your video introductions.  Even if you like to ad lib, it is worth putting some time into writing a script to make sure you include everything you need to say.  Plus it can be surprising how much you forget when you’re in front of the camera.

Here are some ideas for your video script:

Firstly, introduce yourself and welcome the candidate

For example, “Hi, I’m Beth Mahoney, Marketing Manager at Tazio and welcome to our video interview.”

Explain to the candidate why you are asking them to complete a video interview

For example, “We are asking you to complete a video interview so that we can gain better insight into your personality and suitability for the role.  Plus it means we can get back to everyone quicker to set up the second round of interviews.  Most people prefer a video interview to a telephone interview because it gives you more of an opportunity to show your personality, and it’s convenient – you can complete it in your own time without taking time off work.”

Show the candidate what it’s like to work for your company

If you’ve got a corporate video already, this can be a great time to include it.  Don’t worry if you haven’t got one – or big budgets to make one – often the low budget videos work just as well.

For example, you could film clips of different employee talking about what they love about working there.  This shows candidates not only what employees consider important or interest about the role, but also give them an insight into their personalities and their enthusiasm for your company.

For example, “Tazio is driven by innovation and customer success.  We love working at Tazio because we’re working on ground-breaking technology, plus the office is great, it’s an exciting place to be and we hope you love it too.”

Talk about the role

Here is an opportunity to talk about the role and the type of person you are looking for.  This will only be appropriate if you can make individual video introductions for each role.  If you prefer a generic video which can be used for all interviews, leave this bit out – this could be added as text instead before the interview starts.

Is there anything else you need to communicate to candidates whilst you have a captive audience?

Some Tazio customers have also used video introductions as an opportunity to give candidates important information about the role.  For example, if the role involves a lot of overseas travel, talk about this as it may appeal to some candidates, but equally it may be a big turn off for others.  Here is your opportunity to get these important facts through to your candidates while they are listening intently.

Thank the candidate for their interest

For example, “Thank you very much for your interest in working for us.  We look forward to finding out more about you and wish you the very best of luck.”

*Tip for the video presenters

When you are talking on video, imagine you are talking to one person, you will see for yourself when you watch the video that it makes you more relaxed and therefore you come across as more genuine.  Think of a particular person and imagine you are talking to them, for example, a previous candidate who applied for a similar role.
