Redwood girls soccer beats El

When it comes to Girls Soccer in the West Yosemite League, Redwood has been the gold standard in recent years.

The Rangers are the defending WYL champions and have won three out of four titles.

If Redwood coach Jason Vieira has his way, the Rangers will continue to carry on that winning tradition.

Brittany Ontiveros got the Rangers on the board with an early goal, and Stephanie Funk added two goals to cap the scoring.

Goalkeeper Caitlin Owens needed just four saves to preserve the shut out.

“I think the WYL is a little tougher this year than in the past,” Vieira said. “But we have a lot of experienced seniors and a lot of girls who were up last year and got minutes and it is paying off. We have a solid, experienced team. We’ve had some injuries, but girls have stepped up and filled in nicely. We’re asking the girls to do different things, and they’re stepping up.”

The Rangers suffered a setback as they opened defense of their league title with a 2-1 loss against Hanford back on Dec. 11.

But they seem to have righted the ship in their past three victories. Redwood rolled to a 10-0 win over Hanford West, defeated Lemoore 4-2 and El Diamante 3-0.

Vieira credits his team’s turn around to better ball control.

“They’re starting to play well together and trust each other,” he said. “They’re passing the ball with a purpose. They’re thinking about the next movement and where to go. They’re all doing a nice job.”

Vieira said his team is starting to peak, which couldn’t have come at a better time in a competitive league like the WYL, but El Diamante coach Pete Murrieta is struggling to find any consistency out of his team.

The Miners fell to 3-10-2 on the season and 0-3 in the WYL.

“We seem to towards the end of games give up unnecessary goals and that’s because of inexperience,” Murrieta said. “We play good soccer and we play bad soccer. We have to grow. We have to play smarter and play better.”

The Miners showed some positive signs in the game against Redwood. The Rangers scored two goals early and another late. El Diamante had a few opportunities to score against Redwood in the middle part of the game.

“We made some corrections and were doing fine,” Murrieta said. “We had an unlucky bounce on that first goal. The second goal was a decent shot and the third goal was on a beautiful header. You can’t stop that. That’s part of the game.”

The Miners will look to turn things around when they play at Lemoore on Tuesday.

The Rangers will look to keep their winning ways going with a home game against another crosstown rival in Golden West.

“We are starting to see a team and not just individuals playing,” Vieira said. “If we continue to take care of business, I don’t see the slip up against Hanford bothering us at all.”
