GIRLS SOCCER: South Torrance beats Peninsula

As South Torrance defender Charlie Tavormina prepared to take a free kick, she took a moment and had a little conversation with herself.  It was quite the pep talk.

Tavormina drilled a 35-yard free kick for the game's only goal in the 38th minute to lift unbeaten South to a 1-0 nonleague victory Friday night over visiting Peninsula.

"I was talking to myself and I said, `You better make one of these or you're going home,"' Tavormina said, laughing.

It was the decisive moment in an otherwise even match. In fact, Peninsula might have had the more dangerous opportunities with Katie Pingel and Michelle Duarte creating several looks.

But ultimately, Tavormina's impressive strike to the upper left-hand corner of the net stood up as South recorded its Sixth Straight shutout.

"It was a well-taken free kick," Peninsula coach Scotte Massey said. "She could not have put it in a better spot."

Tavormina said she tried her best to clear her mind. That's when she is at her best, she said.

"I looked at the goalkeeper and just went for it," Tavormina said. "When I say I'm going to the corner, it never happens, so I tried not to think about it."

South coach Brad Gomez said Tavormina and University of San Francisco-bound Jessica Nakae share free-kick responsibilities, and usually Nakae takes the closer-range free kicks.

Gomez said assistant coach Alyssa Congdon told him that Tavormina was ready.

"Alyssa said Charlie was going to hit it hard and on frame. Then Charlie unleashed her shot, and we were like, `Whoa.' That was pretty cool," Gomez said. "Before, Charlie would think about her free kicks too much. But now she is just picking a spot and hitting it."

Tavormina anchored a strong defensive effort that included Morgan Mullin, Anju Takei, Samantha Nadeau and Kelsie Bozart.

The defense stepped up with freshman defender Leslie David nursing an injury to record its sixth straight shutout, including shutouts of Sunny Hills and CIF Division I powerhouse Corona del Mar.

"Our defense has been playing pretty hard," Tavormina said. "We usually talk a lot. That helps. And we're solid for our size, too."

Gomez likes the progress he is seeing from his team, particularly after settling for several ties earlier in the season.

After a 5-0-5 start, South has gone 5-0-1 in its last six matches to improve to 11-0-6 heading into Wednesday's Pioneer League-opening showdown at Torrance.

"We were having a lot of close games, and we were finding ways to tie. Now we're finding some wins," Gomez said.

Peninsula (6-3-4) begins defense of its Bay League title on Tuesday against Redondo and is feeling good about where it stands.

"I was pleased overall today, even though we did not get the result we wanted," Massey said. "This was a gauge. South is a good side.

"We're ready to go Tuesday. We're looking forward to it."
