HSE Bans Agency Staff

Proposals by the HSE look set to result in as many as 75 Agency nurses being cut from hospitals in the Louth and Meath.

The HSE is cost-cutting meaning the closure of 50 beds in hospitals across the North East. Our Lady’s Memorial Hospital in Drogheda is set to receive the brunt of the cutbacks by losing the equivalent of 52 full-time nurses.

A spokesman for the Irish Nursing and Midwifery Board has said that such a move ‘will put lives at risk’. The HSE has confirmed that as of December 1st the use of agency staff will not be permitted and they have taken the decision because agency costs rose last year to €176m.
