Simi Valley DUI attorney

Most DUI arrests result in misdemeanor charges in California. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that misdemeanors aren’t serious, however! Misdemeanor drunk driving charges can take a long time to resolve and will be very expensive. That’s why you need an experienced DUI attorney like Robert Helfend.

In California, a drunk driving arrest results in an immediate suspension of your driver’s license. This suspension isn’t part of the criminal process; it’s an administrative action on the part of the California DMV. The DMV process does provide a way for you to get the suspension lifted, but you must contest the arrest and appear at a DMV hearing. This does not take the place of a criminal process.

The criminal process requires you to make an appearance in court. If the court finds you guilty, the judge can impose any number of sanctions against you, in addition to the DMV’s automatic license suspension. These sanctions could include jail time, fines, driving restrictions and driver retraining. They can also include additional license suspension and the use of an ignition interlock on your car.

The judge will determine how long each sanction will remain in place. You may think that you can represent yourself in court, but that’s not a good idea. An experienced attorney can actually improve the outcome of your case. Don’t attempt to represent yourself when you face a DUI charge.
