Why we all Hate Oil and Gas Job Recruitment Agencies

Most engineering specialists we speak to who use TalEng tell us that they hate existing recruitment practices and would prefer not to use a recruiter for their oil and Gas Job search. This is true of many industries where you often hear the following complaints:

  • The silence – we have all been there, you submit an application you are ideal for, and nothing… Not even an email response to say “thanks, but no thanks”.
  • The rush – Recruiters love picking up a phone to an applicant, but they are always under time pressure and have to attempt to get your entire work history in less than 2 minutes.
  • Abusing your data – sending your CV to a company without your permission (soon to be illegal at long last).

In the oil and gas recruitment industry the above problems still exist, but the largest pain point and the one engineering specialists speak to us about is the fact that recruiters are gatekeepers to jobs, but they do not understand the technical roles we do or the skillsets that are needed. They attempt to match people to jobs by word-searching our CVs without any understanding of the technical skills that we are able to offer, and in the process technical specialists get bypassed for oil and gas jobs which they are fully capable of doing.

This unknowledgeable gatekeeper is by far the biggest reason why engineering specialists don’t like using recruiters for their oil and Gas Job Search. We work in an industry where it isn’t easy for someone to understand what all the disciplines do unless they have been there on a project themselves, and recruiters then don’t put relevant people forward for roles they could perform.

We at TalEng bypass this recruitment process by getting your applications directly in-front of oil and gas project managers, cutting out the middle men and making sure you are judged by someone who knows the difference between a process engineer and a process controls engineer.

Hopefully this spells the end for wasted oil and gas job applications.
