Growth in the UK Tech Sector

In a time where it’s difficult to mention the words “economic climate” without someone bringing up the B word it would be easy to think that the UK Tech Sector was facing an up hill battle.

In the three months since I’ve joined Better Placed I’ve spent a lot of my time talking to Sales Directors in that world and I’m delighted that this isn’t what I’m hearing.

Venture capital firms have invested £2.4bn in the UK Tech sector since the referendum on these shores in 2016. Germany saw half that figure. France saw a third of it. The optimism I’m seeing feels informed rather than hopeful.

The average annual salary for professional people working in IT is nearly at £50,000, £4,000 higher than it was last year. Our tech sector is creating jobs at twice the rate of the rest of our economy and the rise of Fintech and Medtech only demonstrate the sheer scale of our opportunity.

So, as things get more and more positive, the great news for those in the recruitment sector is that it’s clear roles are being created to support that growth. It’s exciting to see so many tech based businesses in Manchester all looking for very similar talent. It also means it’s never been more prevalent to define your business from the competition.

Companies can do this in so many different ways. It’s not enough for a business to be solely reliant on excellent commission schemes to attract the best. Top talent are asking the question about flexible working in almost every initial conversation I have these days, likewise benefits packages and clear progression routes.

With all these things outlined, it remains most crucial that businesses are making the effort to properly engage candidates. Of course my job as a leading recruiter is to get people excited about your opportunity but that’s not where the responsibility stops. Giving prompt feedback is what so many businesses have learned to do, if you aren’t you look disinterested and that’s exactly what the candidate you want to hire becomes. Keep your processes slick and transparent from the outset.

I’m so proud to do the job I do and excited for the UK tech sector (particularly the part of it up in Manchester and Leeds). For this growth to continue in your businesses, attracting top talent will remain crucial. We at Better Placed can add so much value to those looking to get it right.
