Stay Active This Fall And Winter With These Pittsburgh Trails!

Eat a little too much over the Thanksgiving holiday? It might be getting colder in Pittsburgh, but that’s no excuse to not get outside and walk it off! If you hate going to the gym, then hiking trails are an excellent alternative to staying in shape and losing weight. Check out some of these great hiking trails and keep that healthy lifestyle going all winter long!

Awesome Hiking Trails In And Around Pittsburgh:

  • Montour Trail – Ride your bike, walk your dog, or run this 47-mile trail that extends from Coraopolis to Clairton. If you’re a beginner then this trial might be perfect for you because it’s relatively flat compared to others. According to montourtrail.org, there are several water fountains along thr route in Cliff Mine, Galadi, Kurnick and Clariton, but they will be shut off during the winter season. However, you can start walking it in the winter and continue during the warmer months to see the fountains in use! There are a number of entry points for this trail – one notable entry point is in Robinson, and another is at 5 Georgetown Road in Canonsburg!
  • Peters Lake Trail – If you’re looking for a trail that has a gorgeous backdrop then this one is for you! This trail is almost 2 miles and loops around Peters Lake in Peters Township. Leashed dogs are permitted and so is kayaking and fishing. It’s not too difficult, but it can get muddy and hikers should be aware of roots that may be in your path.
  • Arrowhead Trail – Another fairly easy paved trail is Arrowhead Trail in Peters Township. This one is approximately 3.5 miles from Route 19 to Brush Run Road, some of it running into the Montour Trail previously mentioned. Since this trail is paved it makes it a great exercise source for runners, walkers, bicycle riders, and even in-line skaters according to visitpa.com. There are many access points throughout Peters, but a good one to start is 610 E. McMurray Rd.,McMurray, PA 15317.
  • Riverview Park – If you’re north of Pittsburgh and an experienced hiker then this park has trails that are perfect for you! This park is approximately 259-acres and actually known for its gorgeous trails. While some areas are steep you’re still able to walk, run, or bike these trails. There are also some great landmarks such as the Allegheny Observatory, Mairdale Watershed, and Snyder’s Point.
  • Rachel Carson Trail – If you’re a Pittsburgh native, you might have heard of the “Rachel Carson Trail Challenge.” This is when experience hikers attempt to hike the 35.7-mile trail with hazardous terrain at once. The Rachel Carson Trial was named for the ecologist Rachel Carson because it’s near her birthplace. If you’re a nature lover then this trail is for you because it extends through woodlands, meadows, streams and more. However if you’re a beginner you might want to steer clear of this one because it also has hills that rise as high as 8,151 feet and drop 8,214 feet! You can enter this trail at Harrison Hills Park, Hartwood Acres Park, North Park, and the Rachel Carson Homestead.
  • Frick Park – Frick Park is one of Pittsburgh’s youngest historic parks, but also one of the larges at 644 acres! This is another trail that is probably best suited for the more experienced hiker since it’s stretch from Point Breeze to the Monongahela River includes steep valleys and wooded slopes according to our source. There are many opportunities for hiking enthusiasts ranging from tennis courts to even public lawn bowling green. A good place to enter this park is 1981 Beechwood Blvd, Pittsburgh, PA 15217.
