‘Vishala: Expanse’

Founded in 2007 by dancers Vijay Palaparty and Nalini Prakash, the Spilling Ink Project brings classical Indian dance and music to contemporary audiences. With a repertoire that reflects India’s artistic, cultural and spiritual roots, the Washington, D.C.-based dancers incorporate a strong element of visual expression into thought-provoking choreography. The result is works such as Vishala: Expanse, a duet inspired by the verses of past and present poets and the south India dance traditions of Bharatanatyam and Kuchipudi. Together, Palaparty and Prakash channel the Hindu goddesses Lakshmi and Radha alongside Ardhanareeswara, a representation of Lord Shiva and the goddess Parvati as one form.
