Trump Set to Nominate HUD’s General Counsel

President Trump will nominate Paul Compton, a partner at Bradley Arant Boult Cummings LLP, to serve as the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s general counsel, according to the firm.

The president, who remains on his first overseas trip in office until Saturday, hasn’t formally announced Compton’s nomination. The position of HUD general counsel also requires Senate confirmation.

Compton currently leads Bradley’s Affordable Housing and community development practice from the firm’s Birmingham, Ala. office, and also holds the title of either counsel or general counsel at the Alabama Bankers Association, the Alabama Consumer Finance Association, and the Alabama Affordable Housing Association.

“We are tremendously proud of Paul, whose knowledge and experience in the areas of affordable housing, community development, and banking and financial services have earned him an outstanding reputation among his peers and clients,” Bradley managing partner Beau Grenier said in a statement from the firm applauding Compton’s nomination.

As the Birmingham News pointed out, Compton is the second Bradley attorney who received a call from the Trump administration: The president nominated Kevin Newsom, who chairs the firm’s appellate group, to serve on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit in Atlanta.

The HUD Office of General Counsel oversees the department’s team of attorneys, arguing on behalf of the government in cases involving the Fair Housing Act and other housing-related laws.

Compton’s expected nomination marks another milestone in the Trump administration’s federal hiring process, which several outlets have observed is running slower than previous presidents’. Trump still has yet to nominate a Federal Housing Administration commissioner, who typically has the most day-to-day control over the FHA and HUD’s operations.

Earlier this month, Politico reported that the administration was close to nominating public-service veteran Brian Montgomery, FHA commissioner in the George W. Bush administration, to a second tour of duty at the post, but there has yet to be an official announcement.
