Thermostatic VS. Pressure Balance Showers

Have you ever been taking a Shower when suddenly someone flushes the toilet or starts doing the dishes? We’ve all been there, and it’s no walk in the park. You’re either scalded to the point where your skin feels like it’s melting, or froze and you wish you were scalded instead. Both thermostatic and pressure balanced showers are designed to allow you to better control the temperature in your shower, but each operates in its own way.

Pressure Balanced Showers

Pressure balanced showers sense the ratio of hot to cold water and adjust the two according to your desired temperature. These valves feature one handle, which controls both the volume and temperature of the water. They don’t react to the temperature of the water but use a piston, sliding disk, or a spool to keep the water balanced. Pressure balanced showers are also much more affordable than thermostatic showers.

Thermostatic Showers

These handy showers sense the actual temperature of the incoming water in order to maintain a steady temperature throughout your shower. Thermostatic showers feature two handles – one controlling the volume of the water while the other controls the temperature. You’re able to change the flow of the water without changing the temperature, which makes these showers ideal for conserving water. Another great benefit is the ability to use the showerhead and the handshower at the same time.

Both pressure balanced and thermostatic showers are designed to last a long time. Ultimately, which one is best for your shower depends on your budget and personal preference.
