Greene leads among Florida’s black Democratic voters, Levine in second place, Gillum third

Real estate investor Jeff Greene leads all Florida Democratic gubernatorial candidates in support among black voters, according to a poll by StPete Polls.

Greene finished with 23.4 percent among black Democrats who said they planned to vote in the primary. Former Miami Beach Mayor Philip Levine was second with 19.1 percent. Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum was third with 18.3 percent and former U.S. Rep. Gwen Graham was fourth with 14 percent.

21.8 percent of black Democratic voters were still undecided.

Gillum has the longest list of endorsements from current and former black Democratic elected officials in Florida. But Greene and Levine have both been spending large amounts of money from their personal fortunes on TV ads.

Greene has an estimated $3.8 billion net worth and has said he’s willing to “spend whatever it takes” to run a strong race.

“Whether we spend $100 million, $50 million, $200 million – whatever it is, we will spend whatever it takes to make sure our message is heard at least equally to what the Republican message has been,” Greene said in an interview with the Associated Press.

Levine has a net worth of $133 million. The financial disclosures by Gillum show that he is not a millionaire.

Greene and Graham were tied for first among all Democratic voters with 21.5 percent each. Levine was third with 19.4 percent. Gillum was fourth with 9.6 percent. Business owner Chris King was fifth with 2.5 percent. 24.7 percent of Democratic voters were still undecided.

Greene had the highest rates of support among women (21.6 percent) and voters between the ages of 18 and 29 (29.3 percent).

Time is beginning to run short for candidates in the August 28 Florida primary election. Absentee ballots for primary will begin to be mailed today. Back in 2014, a total of 52 percent of primary voters used absentee ballots.
