KMP Expressway opens for public use: Adds another connectivity advantage to New Gurugram

The KMP Expressway was inaugurated by PM Modi in a rally at Gurugram on 19th Nov 2018. For years the residents of Gurugram, Faridabad etc. were forced to use Delhi as a transit point in their journey northward towards Chandigarh, Punjab or Himachal Pradesh etc. which was a very time consuming affair due to the Delhi roads getting choked under the weight of the traffic. Similar fate of waiting hours on end in traffic awaited people travelling southwards from Chandigarh, Punjab, Panipat, Ambala, Himachal Pradesh etc. And it wasn’t just the travellers that suffered but the common man in Delhi also was inconvenienced due to the traffic and the resultant pollution that was spread by the entry of so many vehicles. It was a frequent sight to see many kilo meter long jams at places such as Karnal bypass. These traffic jams have been found to be one of the major reasons for the poor AQI score of Delhi.

The Kmp Expressway or the Western Peripheral expressway which begins its journey near Kundli in Sonipat district of Haryana and is connected to Palwal in Faridabad district of Haryana has a total length of approximately 135 KM. It was initially conceived to be a 4 lane expressway but was recently upgraded to a 6 lane expressway, costing a total of Rs.9000 Crores. Together with the Eastern Peripheral expressway it is expected to reduce the traffic in Delhi by a significant margin (50,000 heavy vehicles by some estimates).

The KMP expressway is connected to other important highways leading to Delhi at various points such as NH-44 at Kundli, NH-10 at Bahadurgarh, NH-8 at Manesar, NH-248 A at Sohna and NH-2 at Palwal. The expressway has been a long time coming as the project was stuck in delays after delays since its inception in 2003. The original deadline for this project was the year 2009 but as land acquisition issues rose it got delayed by nearly a decade.
