Caught-between construction accidents on the rise, warns report

Many types of accidents that can occur at Construction sites, such as falls from scaffolding or injuries due to malfunctioning equipment. However, a recent report noted that caught-between or caught-in incidents were on the rise in the construction industry.

According to the Center for Construction Research and Training (CPWR), 275 Construction Workers died due to such incidents between 2011 and 2015. The data indicated around 69 percent of the fatalities occurred because construction workers were “caught or crushed in collapsing materials,” marking a 50 percent rise over five years. The CPWR found that older construction workers were at a particularly greater risk of death from caught-between or caught-in accidents.

The report suggests that employers could take a number of steps in order to prevent caught-between or caught-in accidents at construction sites. Some solutions include enforcing safety protocols, increasing training and ensuring workers have proper protective equipment. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has listed caught-between accidents among its top four construction hazards.
