All is well: Scan rules out stroke, gives Eman Ahmed clean bill of health

MUMBAI: Amid drama on Tuesday, Egyptian Eman Ahmed (36) underwent a CT scan to establish whether or not she had indeed suffered a stroke during her three-month-long treatment in Mumbai as her sister had feared.

Her sister’s fear-part of a widely circulated video that alleges that Eman’s health is delicate and has a clot in her brain and suffers epileptic fits-also resulted in 12 out of Eman’s 13 doctors treating her for gratis at Saifee Hospital, near Charni Road station, “resigning” from the task. “It is a symbolic gesture to protest against the allegations made by her sister,” said Dr Aparna Govil Bhasker. “We will take check on Eman as and when required, but we consider her sister’s outburst an assault on our care,” she added. As for the CT scan report, it vindicated the medical team’s stand that Eman is better than before. “Our patient is half and hearty. There are no problems,” said hospital COO H Shehabi on Tuesday. Radiologist Dr Rajeev Mehta said that the CT scan revealed the scar of Eman’s previous stroke. “As her right side is paralysed , we had theorized that she had had a stroke in the left part of her brain. The scan showed an old vascular insult in the left middle cerebral artery,” he said, adding that there is no evidence of new clot. Neurologist Dr Arun Shah said the cause of Eman’s repeated seizures is clearly due to scar epilepsy.

It is learnt that Eman’s sister, Shaimaa, isn’t satisfied with the report and will get a second opinion. Shaimaa, said she was on Tuesday called for a meeting with the Egyptian consul general, Ahmad Khalil, and hospital authorities. “They told me that I have to leave the hospital. I agreed, but when I asked them when, they refused to give me the details,” she added. While speaking to reporters outside the hospital, Shaimaa said she is worried about her sister’s health. Shaimaa also said that she had got an expert neurologist from Egypt to check on Eman 10 days ago. “The hospital didn’t allow him to meet her,” she said, adding that the hospital told her her sister would be thrown out within six hours if she brought a doctor from outside. (A hospital spokesperson denied any threats issued to the sister and said she hadn’t taken permission for the doctor’s visit).

Dr Aparna Govil Bhaskar, one of the treating doctors, said she was upset with the allegations. “She is 75% better than she was,” she said. Dr Muffazal Lakdawala, who operated on Eman and is her main doctor, said, “I am hurt (with the allegations) and don’t want to make any comments.”
