Director Ridley Scott really did want to get biblical with Alien: Covenant. The sequel to Prometheus and possible prequel to the original Alien was originally to be titled Alien: Paradise Lost, and while that clunky title was rightfully cast aside, whatever idea inspired it clearly survived. A new theatrical poster for the upcoming movie is making the rounds today, and it sure looks like something out of Milton.

The poster is an artful take on xenomorphs demonstrating, in their own way, that humans have not found paradise on this new planet. Pretty sure there’s a facehugger in there, too, with the same message. Alien: Covenant is thought to follow a new crew as they arrive on the Engineer homeworld that was referred to in Prometheus — from this poster and the trailer, it looks like that crew is in for the same kind of brutal, bloody ride Sigourney Weaver had back in the day.

Most of the buzz around the poster has been around what looks like the outline of a xenomorph queen on the top, looking on at the scene in what might be approval. I don’t know, it’s hard to parse xenomorph facial expressions, but I figure they don’t usually convey things that aren’t malice.

The style of the poster could be a throwback to the work that 19th century artist Gustave Doré did for updated editions of John Milton’s Paradise Lost, the high school curriculum mainstay that covers the fall of Satan, a war between heaven and hell, and the creation of pretty much everything. So, I figure that means the movie is an allegory of the Engineers’ disastrous pursuit of knowledge and descent into suffering and death. That, or the production team read Milton and that all the battles were super rad, and that apocalyptic stuff is cool and good. Either way.
